    How you'll contribute

    A Lead First Assist (First Assist Surg Tech) who excels in this role:

    • Serves as a clinical resource and mentor for Surgical Technologists, Surgical First Assists, and perioperative staff.
    • Assists the Director of Surgery/OR with orientation, training, competency validation, and ongoing professional development of Surgical First Assist staff.
    • Coordinates daily workflow and staffing assignments for Surgical First Assists to ensure appropriate coverage and efficient utilization of resources.
    • Collaborates with surgeons, anesthesia providers, nursing leadership, and perioperative staff to promote efficient patient flow and procedural outcomes.
    • Participates in preference card reviews and updates to ensure accuracy and standardization of surgical supplies, instruments, and equipment.
    • Assists with quality improvement initiatives, regulatory compliance activities, and performance improvement projects within the surgical department.
    • Supports surgical service line growth through process improvement, surgeon onboarding, and implementation of best practices.
    • Identifies opportunities to improve efficiency, patient safety, and cost containment and communicates recommendations to leadership.
    • Participates in the evaluation, selection, and implementation of new surgical instruments, equipment, and technology.
    • Assists leadership with scheduling, call coverage coordination, and resolution of operational issues affecting perioperative services.
    • Conducts audits related to sterile technique, surgical assisting practices, documentation, and compliance with department policies and regulatory standards.
    • Serves as a liaison between surgeons, Surgical First Assists, Surgical Technologists, and nursing staff to promote effective communication and teamwork.
    • Assists in developing, reviewing, and updating department policies, procedures, and educational materials.
    • Maintains competency in advanced surgical assisting techniques and serves as a role model for clinical excellence and professional conduct.
    • Participates in departmental committees, meetings, and strategic initiatives as assigned.

     

    Additional Leadership Responsibilities

    • Provides day-to-day oversight and guidance for Surgical First Assist staff.
    • Assists with interviewing, onboarding, performance coaching, and competency assessments.
    • Monitors supply utilization and collaborates with materials management to support inventory control and cost-effective practices.
    • Escalates operational, quality, or patient safety concerns to department leadership and assists with corrective action planning.

     

    This establishes the Lead role as a working clinical leader who still functions as a First Assist while supporting staff development, operational efficiency, quality initiatives, and surgeon relations.

    What we're looking for

    Applicants should have a High School Diploma (or equivalent) and Graduate of an Accredited program for Surgical Scrub Technicians. Additional requirements include:

    • First Assistant (FA) certification required for this role. 

    • Certified Surgical First Assist (CSFA) with the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting

    • Associate's Degree Preferred; Graduate of a Program in Discipline Required

    • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) or the American Red Cross (ARC) required within 7 days of hire

    Experience

    • One or more years of experience as a Surgical Scrub Technician with CSFA certification required
    • Specific knowledge of surgical procedures required
    • Extensive communication skills, team building skills, surgical assisting and instrumentation skills required
