Lead Heavy Equipment Diesel Mechanic

Job Overview

Scrapworks LLC is hiring a Lead Heavy Equipment & Fleet Mechanic to keep our mobile equipment and truck fleet running across our Southeast Texas facilities (Port Arthur, Beaumont, and Orange). This is a roving, hands-on lead role responsible for the diagnosis, repair, and preventive maintenance of material handlers, loaders, excavators, and hydraulic attachments, as well as our CDL trucks and trailers.

The ideal candidate is a seasoned mechanic with strong heavy equipment and diesel fleet experience — hydraulics, diesel engines, electrical diagnostics, and welding/fabrication — plus the ability to lead and coordinate maintenance work across multiple yards. You'll set preventive maintenance priorities, minimize downtime, mentor junior mechanics, and keep every machine and truck safe and production-ready.

This is a working lead position split between shop and field, moving between yards as needed. It's a physically demanding, safety-critical role. Mechanical depth, diagnostic instinct, and disciplined safety habits are essential.

Key Responsibilities

Mobile Heavy Equipment Maintenance & Repair

• Diagnose, repair, and maintain material handlers (Sennebogen, Fuchs, Liebherr, Cat MH series), wheel loaders, and excavators
• Service hydraulic systems — pumps, motors, cylinders, valves, hoses, and fittings
• Perform diesel engine repair and maintenance: cooling, fuel, air intake, exhaust, and aftertreatment systems
• Troubleshoot electrical and electronic systems, ECMs, sensors, and wiring
• Maintain undercarriage, tracks, final drives, tires, and running gear
• Repair and rebuild hydraulic attachments — shears, grapples, magnets, and balers (blades, tines, wear components)

Fleet Maintenance (Trucks & Trailers)

• Maintain and repair Class A/B trucks, roll-off hoist systems, and dump and flatbed trailers
• Service brakes, air systems, suspension, drivetrain, and PTO/hydraulic systems
• Keep the fleet DOT/FMCSA compliant — support annual inspections and keep vehicles inspection-ready and road-legal
• Address driver vehicle defect reports (DVIRs) promptly and maintain repair documentation
• Maintain tires, wheels, and lighting for road legality and safety

Welding & Fabrication

• Repair and replace cutting edges, wear plate, buckets, and body components
• Fabricate and repair brackets, guards, and structural parts as needed
• Perform torch cutting and MIG/stick welding for equipment and attachment repairs

Maintenance Leadership & Coordination

• Build and prioritize preventive maintenance schedules across all facilities to minimize downtime
• Assign work to and mentor junior mechanics; coordinate shop and field repairs
• Manage parts inventory, order parts, and track maintenance and equipment-history records
• Coordinate with outside vendors and warranty providers for major or specialized repairs
• Keep maintenance logs, equipment hours, and service records current and accurate

Safety & Compliance

• Follow and enforce all safety protocols including lockout/tagout, PPE, and equipment clearance zones
• Handle fluids, waste oil, and hazardous materials per applicable regulations
• Keep shop and work areas clean, organized, and hazard-free
• Participate in and support facility safety meetings and training

Reporting

• Track equipment hours, downtime, and repair activity across facilities
• Report equipment status and maintenance needs to Operations Managers and ownership
• Flag recurring issues and recommend repairs, rebuilds, or replacements

Qualifications

Required

• Minimum 5 years experience as a heavy equipment and/or diesel fleet mechanic
• Strong hydraulic, diesel engine, and electrical/electronic diagnostic skills
• Welding and fabrication ability (MIG/stick, torch cutting)
• Ability to work across multiple yards — valid driver's license and reliable transportation
• Own basic hand tools
• Strong safety discipline — consistent PPE use, lockout/tagout compliance, hazard awareness
• Physically able to work outdoors in all weather, perform field repairs, lift 50+ lbs, and work on uneven terrain
• Reliable attendance

Preferred

• Experience with scrap, recycling, or demolition equipment (Sennebogen, Fuchs, Liebherr, Cat)
• Experience servicing shear, grapple, and magnet attachments
• Prior lead or supervisory experience directing other mechanics
• CDL (Class A or B) for road-testing and moving trucks
• DOT/FMCSA inspection knowledge; qualified or willing to certify to perform annual DOT inspections
• Bilingual English/Spanish
• OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification
