    Job Description

    The Histology Lead works under the supervision of the Laboratory Director to provide oversight of the histology department. The Lead is responsible for evaluating a caregiver''s performance and ensuring that staff are competent. Works with the Laboratory director and Pathologists to determine goals of the department. Performs microtomy, stains, and monitors documentation, complies statistical data for management. Reviews QC, CAP surveys and department QA''s. Evaluates new stains, trains new caregivers, writes procedure, and ensures CAP compliance. Rotates call as needed. Gives excellent customer service.

    Skills and Abilities

    Essential Technical/Motor Skills

    • Precise hand/ eye coordination is necessary to prepare and process specimens.

    Interpersonal Skills

    • Effective communication skills and ability to interact with patients, staff, visitors, physicians, etc.
    • Must work well as a team member.

    Essential Physical Requirements

    • Ability to move between lab and other departments.
    • Ability to stand and\or sit for long periods of time while working at instruments.
    • Ability to bend and\or sit, stoop and lift 20-30 pounds.

    Essential Mental Abilities

    • Ability to follow rules\ instructions such as procedures for processing specimens.

    Essential Sensory Requirements

    • Ability to see and to distinguish color.

    Exposure to Hazards

    • Infectious body fluids, hazardous chemicals and fumes.

    Other Skills and Abilities

    • Resource person for laboratory staff, physician, nurses, office personal and internal/external customers. Is responsible for investigating and resolving any issues/concerns that are identified. Keeps department CAP compliant.
    • Recognizes instrument issues, malfunction and takes appropriate action.
    • Trains/orients new hires, evaluating their performance and competency.
    • Participates in evaluation of new stains. Writes and maintains policies and procedures to keep current for the department.
    • Prepare and maintain the quality of Histology and cytology stains and reagents.
    • Inventory, order, and stock supplies and clean pathology grossing areas, frozen section rooms, histology area and maintain all equipment.
    • Embed, section, make slides, stain, coverslip, and label tissues for examination by the pathologists. Perform special stains as directed by the pathologists.
    • Take telephone calls and prepare specimens for send out. Perform computer operations necessary to enter patient information, order tests and charge for procedures.
    • Maintain files of tissue blocks and slides.
    • Other duties as assigned

    Education

    • H.S. Diploma - Required
    • Associate''s Degree - Preferred
    • Bachelor''s Degree - Preferred

    Work Experience

    • 2 Years - histology laboratory experience - Required
    • Training orientation will be up to eight weeks. - Required
    • management experience preferred - Preferred

    Licenses and Certifications

    • Histotechnician (HT) - ASCP - Required Upon Hire Or
    • Histotechnologist (HTL) - ASCP - Required Upon Hire

    Travel Requirements

    • Must be able to travel between various system facilities and off-site locations as needed. - Required
