Lead Instrumentation and Controls

Summary

Major Responsibilities

• Report to the Client Thacker Pass Lead Instrument and Controls Startup Engineer and Commissioning Preoperational Manager.
• Assume overall responsibility for the Instrument and Controls systems of the Thacker Pass Project.
• Coordinate with other disciplines and organizations to prepare and execute plans to complete all Instrument and Controls testing activities including component level, system level and integrated facility level testing.
• Develop Advanced Work Packages for Instruments and Controls Precommissioning and Commissioning testing activities during home office assignment.
• Participate in development of the project startup manual.
• Prepare system preoperational testing procedures and integrated system/unit test procedures and other required documents.
• Prepare, award and administer specialty subcontracts as required to support commissioning activities.
• Provide On the Job training of client personnel if required by the contract.
• Provide input to engineering on revisions required to system descriptions, vendor operating and maintenance manuals, and related documentation.
• Ensure all startup and commissioning documentation is consistent and accurate.
• Prepare detailed startup plans for project precommissioning and commissioning activities.
• Monitor and maintain applicable precommissioning and commissioning schedules and budget accounts.
• Direct, conduct and participate in system turnover walkdowns, including Construction and Client turnovers.
• Develop, track and resolve punch list items related to electrical equipment.
• Work hours as required, including shiftwork, overtime, weekends and holidays to support project activities.
• Perform other duties as directed in support of project activities.

Education and Experience Requirements

• Requires bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) and 10-13 years of relevant experience, or 14-17 years of relevant work experience.
• Minimum of 7 years prior experience in Precommissioning, Commissioning, Startup or facility Operations including at least 2 years in a supervisory or managerial position.
• Thorough understanding of the physical processes associated with Mining and Extraction facilities and associated process equipment including centrifuges, compressors, mixers, conveyors, pumps, and related systems.
• Thorough understanding of control philosophies associated with mining and extraction processes.
• Minimum of 2 years' experience in Precommissioning, Commissioning, or Process Operation of Mining and Extraction facilities is a plus, but not required.

• Skilled in English oral and written communication.
• Experience with PLC, HMI, SCADA, and DCS systems.
• Computer literate knowledge mandatory including Outlook, Excel, Word, and related applications.
• Computer literate in Client systems such as SETROUTE, TeamWorks, Smart Completions, and related tools is a plus.
• Prior experience with Client startup processes and procedures.
• Prior experience managing or supervising startup activities on one or more large-scale projects.
• Ability to read and understand electrical schematics, SLDs, wiring diagrams, instrument loops, and mechanical PFD drawings.
• Technical knowledge of startup, operations, maintenance, testing, and troubleshooting.
• Knowledge of engineering systems, calculations, startup methodologies, and engineering software applications.
• Extensive knowledge of precedents in startup and operations and broad knowledge of related disciplines.
• Mining and Metals project testing and commissioning experience is a plus but not essential.
• Experience creating and maintaining instrumentation documentation including specifications, calibration procedures, and maintenance plans.
• Experience specifying and sourcing control devices for process systems.
• Experience testing, calibrating, installing, repairing, inspecting, and troubleshooting equipment and monitoring devices.
• Responsible for reviewing project designs and recommending design changes to ensure safe startup and operation.
• Ability to walk at least 3 miles per day over uneven ground.
• Ability to climb and descend stair towers 100 feet in height at least 6 times per shift.
• Ability to climb and descend ladders 25 feet in height at least 6 times per shift.
• Ability to climb and maneuver on temporary scaffolds.
• Ability to work in ambient temperatures ranging from -10 F to 105 F while accessing project equipment.
