Lead Medical Laboratory Scientist - Full-Time

Job Summary

Responsible for performing a variety of laboratory procedures within assigned laboratory areas as a licensed or certified laboratory professional. This position oversees selected laboratory processes, workflow activities, quality assurance programs, and staff development initiatives while ensuring accurate and timely testing of blood and other biological specimens. The role serves as a technical resource for laboratory staff, supports operational excellence through problem-solving and process improvement, and assists laboratory leadership with quality, compliance, instrumentation, and personnel-related activities. This position performs pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical functions and may require on-call coverage.

Essential Functions

  • Performs analytical testing of blood and other biological specimens in accordance with established laboratory procedures, quality standards, competency requirements, and regulatory guidelines.

  • Interprets, evaluates, and verifies complex test results while serving as a technical resource for laboratory staff and healthcare providers.

  • Performs pre-analytical activities including specimen collection, specimen processing, equipment maintenance, function checks, inventory control, cleaning and disinfection, quality control, and calibration activities.

  • Performs post-analytical activities including result verification, reporting of routine and critical values, documentation, and communication of testing information to providers and clinical staff.

  • Provides orientation, training, competency assessment, and ongoing education to new employees, students, and laboratory personnel.

  • Serves as a preceptor for laboratory staff and students while maintaining appropriate training and competency documentation.

  • Provides guidance and technical support to laboratory personnel and assists with resolving operational and customer service issues.

  • Manages workflow and assists with prioritization of laboratory activities to ensure efficient operations and timely test reporting.

  • Leads quality control, quality assurance, and quality improvement activities.

  • Performs instrument maintenance, troubleshooting, calibration, and operational oversight to ensure optimal laboratory performance.

  • Assists with procedure development, revision, review, and implementation.

  • Participates in laboratory and organizational performance improvement initiatives.

  • Assists laboratory leadership with special projects, data collection, scheduling activities, interviewing candidates, staff evaluations, and competency management.

  • Supports compliance with accreditation standards, regulatory requirements, laboratory policies, and quality management systems.

  • Maintains confidentiality of patient information and laboratory results.

  • Follows safety standards including appropriate use of personal protective equipment, infection prevention practices, hazardous material handling, and chemical safety procedures.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Technical expertise related to laboratory testing, instrumentation, procedures, and processes performed within the assigned laboratory area.

  • Knowledge of laboratory regulations, accreditation requirements, quality assurance practices, and compliance standards.

  • Ability to work independently and adapt to changing priorities while directing workflow with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to maintain laboratory equipment, records, quality assessment activities, and technical documentation.

  • Ability to educate, train, mentor, and evaluate laboratory personnel and students.

  • Strong critical thinking, analytical reasoning, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to interpret complex laboratory results and provide technical consultation.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing, with patients, providers, team members, and customers.

  • Basic computer proficiency and ability to operate laboratory information systems, electronic documentation systems, and Microsoft Office applications.

  • Strong organizational, leadership, and time-management skills.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with all applicable privacy regulations.

  • Knowledge of safety protocols, hazardous materials handling, infection prevention practices, and laboratory best practices.

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree required.

Field of Study

  • Chemical Science, Biological Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or a related laboratory science field from an accredited institution required.

  • Candidates with alternative educational backgrounds may qualify if they meet applicable CLIA equivalency requirements.

Work Experience

  • Two years of technical laboratory experience required.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Additional licensure, certification, or credentialing requirements may apply depending on the specific laboratory, specialty area, or state of employment.

Additional Information

  • Equivalent laboratory education and experience may be considered in accordance with CLIA regulations for high-complexity testing personnel, including:

  • Sixty semester hours from an accredited institution with qualifying laboratory science coursework.

  • Completion of an ABHES or CAAHEP accredited clinical laboratory training program.

  • Documented laboratory training in each specialty area performing high-complexity testing.

  • Successful completion of an official U.S. military medical laboratory training program and qualifying laboratory experience.

  • Individuals who qualified and served as high-complexity testing personnel in a CLIA-certified laboratory as of December 28, 2024, and have continued to do so without interruption.

Additional certification requirements may apply based on department, specialty area, or state regulations. Due to nomenclature changes, MT (ASCP and MT (AMT credentials are now recognized as MLS (ASCP and MLS (AMT.
