Lead Metrology & GD&T Inspector — Ultra‑Precision CNC

A day in the life

You arrive on the shop floor where complex multi‑axis parts are coming off the machines. Before the first coffee cools, you’re checking a first‑piece to tenths (.0001") with a micrometer in one hand and a print rich with GD&T in the other. You move from optical comparator to surface finish tester, validating a 16 Ra microfinish, then partner with a machinist at a 5‑axis VMC to fine‑tune offsets. Throughout the shift, you rotate between in‑process checks, final buy‑offs, and supporting first articles, documenting every critical dimension and surface finish so our customers see zero defects.

Impact & responsibilities

• Own first‑piece, in‑process, and final inspections for complex, tight‑tolerance CNC components.
• Validate intricate geometries and critical surfaces against blueprints, GD&T, and engineering requirements.
• Operate advanced metrology tools: optical comparators, profilometers/surface finish testers, height/bore/thread gauges, micrometers, calipers, and more.
• Confirm microfinish and key dimensions to demanding specs, including tenths (.0001").
• Collaborate on the floor with machinists, programmers, and engineering to catch issues early and improve processes.
• Record results, maintain inspection reports, and uphold meticulous quality records.
• Flag nonconforming product and contribute to root‑cause and corrective action activities.
• Support FAIs, capability studies, and customer documentation packages.

What you’ll bring

• 5+ years of precision CNC inspection experience.
• Demonstrated success inspecting ultra‑tight tolerance, complex machined parts.
• Expert blueprint reading and GD&T interpretation.
• Hands‑on proficiency with advanced metrology and precision gauges.
• Uncompromising attention to detail and a zero‑defect mindset.
• Comfort operating on the production floor alongside machinists and engineers.

Preferred

• FARO arm operation/programming experience.
• Background inspecting parts with microfinish requirements of 16 Ra and below.
• Familiarity with ISO 9001 or AS9100 systems.
• Foundational CNC machining or setup experience.

• Horizontal Machining Centers — 3–4 axis (Doosan, Makino) and 5+ axis
• Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) and general measurement gauges
• Optical comparator, calipers, micrometers, height/bore/thread gauges
• Surface finish testers/profilometers; Hardness Tester (Starrett)
• Cylindrical grinder
• 3D modeling and 2D drawings (AutoCAD, SolidWorks)
• Shop support equipment: crane, forklifts
