LOCATION: This position requires frequent travel to project sites across the continental United States (CONUS) and outside the continental United States (OCONUS).
ABOUT THE JOB
The Tepa Companies are seeking a Lead Painter to be responsible for leading and assisting industrial painting and coatings crews in the safe, efficient, and quality-focused completion of assigned work. This position serves as a working lead, providing day-to-day direction, technical guidance, and support to crew members while performing hands-on industrial coating and surface preparation activities. The Lead Painter works under the direction of the Foreman and supports the successful completion of projects in accordance with project specifications, schedules, safety requirements, and quality standards. The leadman position gives direct authority and responsibility when the Foreman is not on site.
Job Functions:
- Perform tasks involving surface preparation and application of industrial coatings to aboveground storage tanks and other surfaces applicable to coatings and linings projects in a safe, productive, and quality-focused manner
- Perform a variety of manual labor tasks associated with industrial painting, abrasive blasting, coatings, and other coatings and linings operations for commercial and government projects
- Perform coatings-related activities including, but not limited to, tending to and operating abrasive blast equipment, shoveling spent blast abrasive, mixing industrial coatings, and accurately applying industrial coatings to specified thicknesses
- Communicate daily work assignments and expectations to crew members and assist the Foreman in coordinating daily activities
- Participate in daily tailgate safety meetings and communicate safety requirements, job hazards, and work expectations to crew members
- Assist the Foreman in identifying and resolving issues related to work activities, equipment, materials, and changing site conditions
- Respond quickly and effectively to changing site conditions, assess changed conditions, and communicate impacts or concerns to the Foreman
- Maintain an open line of communication with the Foreman and other staff on site regarding task execution, work progress, quality, safety, and project completion
- Report quality, safety, production, equipment, and personnel concerns to the Foreman in a timely manner
- Support the Division Quality Program
- Operate under the authority of the SSPC Quality Control Supervisor to perform assigned quality-related responsibilities
- Adhere to Tepa and Goshawk Safety and Health policies and procedures to prevent injuries and illnesses on assigned project work sites
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Mentor, show guidance and support to individuals with less experience.
- Monitor work quality, inspect materials and workmanship, and implement quality control measures to meet project standards.
- Facilitate communication between team members and management, address challenges, and adapt to changing conditions on the job site.
- Provide guidance to resolve issues quickly and maintain productivity.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
- High school diploma or GED preferred
- 2+ years of experience with large-scale, multi-phased industrial coatings projects, including internal and external tank coatings, demonstrating the knowledge and ability to perform the required work for the Coatings & Linings Service Line
- 3+ years of experience performing industrial painting, abrasive blasting, or industrial coating activities
- Previous experience serving as a lead worker, crew lead, or senior craft worker in industrial coatings, preferred, OR demonstrated leadership potential
- Familiar with general construction including OSHA requirements
- Proficient in accurately applying industrial coatings at specified thickness to complex industrial structures by brush and roll application, mixing industrial coatings, and operating industrial painting equipment such as abrasive blast pots, conventional spray pots/guns, airless spray pumps/guns, and plural component spray equipment
- Ability to listen, understand, follow, and transmit written and oral instruction in English
- Ability to organize, record and present information in a clear accurate and concise manner
- Ability to adapt to changes in site conditions and solve problems quickly and effectively
- Ability to continuously shift tasks as necessary to complete project goals
- Ability to change from day shift to night shift as required by project conditions
- Ability to proactively address potential unsafe conditions
- Knowledge of first aid and applicable safety precautions
- Must be willing to travel
- Must have reliable transportation to and from work sites
- Must be able to pass a background check required to access US military installations
- Must have a valid driver’s license
- OSHA 30-hour General or Construction Safety and Health training within the last 5 years
- AMPP Coatings Application Specialist Level 1 certification (preferred, not required)
- AMPP/NACE Coatings Inspector Program Level 1 certification (preferred, not required)
