This position supports daily prescription processing, compounding preparation, production workflow, fulfillment, inventory control, quality compliance, and team performance.

The Lead Pharmacy Technician serves as the primary point of contact for technician workflow questions, shift coordination, training, issue escalation, and daily production priorities. This role works closely with pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, customer service, quality, inventory, shipping, and operations leadership to ensure prescriptions are processed accurately, safely, compliantly, and on schedule.

The ideal candidate is an experienced pharmacy technician who demonstrates strong technical knowledge, leadership ability, attention to detail, urgency, and accountability.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    Team Leadership and Workflow Coordination

    · Lead the daily activities of pharmacy technicians across assigned work areas.

    · Assign technicians to workstations based on prescription volume, staffing, qualifications, workload, and operational priorities.

    · Conduct shift-start huddles to communicate daily goals, staffing assignments, safety concerns, quality expectations, and production priorities.

    · Monitor workload throughout the shift and reallocate resources as needed to prevent bottlenecks.

    · Provide real-time coaching, direction, and support to pharmacy technicians.

    · Serve as the first point of escalation for technician questions and operational issues.

    · Escalate clinical, quality, compliance, staffing, or safety concerns to the appropriate pharmacist or manager.

    · Promote teamwork, professionalism, accountability, and a strong patient-focused culture.

    · Support leadership with attendance management, performance feedback, and corrective-action documentation as requested.

    Prescription Processing and Production Support

    · Support prescription intake, data entry, order entry, insurance or payment processing, refill processing, and prescription preparation within the authorized technician scope.

    · Review prescription work queues and prioritize urgent, delayed, or time-sensitive orders.

    · Verify that required prescription information, patient information, prescriber information, formulas, labels, and supporting documentation are complete.

    · Identify missing, conflicting, or unclear information and route it to a pharmacist for review.

    · Coordinate prescription movement through intake, pharmacist verification, labeling, fulfillment, and shipping.

    · Monitor aging prescriptions and take action to prevent avoidable delays.

    · Troubleshoot prescription and order issues in collaboration with pharmacists, customer service, and fulfillment teams.

    · Perform technician duties as needed to maintain workflow and meet production requirements.

    Quality and Compliance

    · Ensure pharmacy technicians comply with applicable federal and state pharmacy regulations, company policies, standard operating procedures, and quality-system requirements.

    · Reinforce HIPAA, patient confidentiality, data integrity, and documentation standards.

    · Review technician work for completeness, accuracy, legibility, and compliance within the permitted scope of practice.

    · Identify and escalate dispensing errors, labeling errors, product complaints, adverse events, temperature excursions, damaged products, and potential quality events.

    · Assist with investigations, root-cause analysis, corrective and preventive actions, and process-improvement initiatives.

    · Support internal audits, regulatory inspections, inventory audits, and quality reviews as requested.

    · Ensure expired, damaged, quarantined, recalled, or rejected materials are properly identified and segregated.

    · Maintain accurate training, cleaning, production, inventory, and equipment records as assigned.

    · Promote a culture in which employees stop work and escalate concerns when patient safety, product quality, or compliance may be at risk.

    Training and Employee Development

    · Train and onboard new pharmacy technicians on pharmacy systems, workflows, equipment, documentation, safety requirements, and departmental procedures.

    · Maintain training checklists and communicate technician qualification status to management.

    · Observe employee performance and provide timely coaching and retraining.

    · Identify skill gaps and recommend additional training or development.

    · Assist with competency assessments and annual technician performance evaluations.

    · Crosstrain technicians across multiple functions to improve flexibility and operational coverage.

    · Model appropriate conduct, attendance, communication, safety practices, and compliance behaviors.

    Inventory and Materials Management

    · Monitor medication ingredients, components, packaging materials, labels, and supplies required for daily production.

    · Coordinate with inventory personnel to prevent shortages and production interruptions.

    · Verify that materials are properly received, stored, rotated, and issued according to company procedures.

    · Support lot-number, expiration-date, and beyond-use-date documentation.

    · Reinforce first-expire, first-out inventory practices where applicable.

    · Investigate inventory discrepancies and escalate unresolved variances.

    · Assist with cycle counts, physical inventories, controlled-substance counts, and inventory reconciliation as authorized.

    · Ensure refrigerated, frozen, controlled, hazardous, and temperature-sensitive materials are stored appropriately.

    Fulfillment and Shipping Support

    · Coordinate with fulfillment and shipping teams to ensure prescriptions are packaged and shipped accurately and on schedule.

    · Monitor orders awaiting labeling, pharmacist verification, packaging, carrier pickup, or other required actions.

    · Assist with investigating missing, incorrect, damaged, delayed, or returned orders.

    · Ensure temperature-sensitive and special-handling products are packaged according to approved procedures.

    · Support order prioritization based on patient need, shipping cutoff times, product stability, and operational requirements.

Equipment, Safety, and Work Area Readiness

    · Confirm that equipment, tools, workstations, and production areas are clean, organized, functional, and ready for use.

    · Ensure technicians complete required cleaning, maintenance, calibration, and equipment-use records.

    · Report equipment failures, safety hazards, spills, injuries, and near misses immediately.

    · Support workplace safety initiatives and reinforce safe material-handling practices.

    · Participate in accident, incident, and near-miss investigations as requested.

    · Maintain orderly work areas using established housekeeping and organizational standards.

    Continuous Improvement and Growth Support

    · Identify workflow bottlenecks, recurring errors, waste, delays, and capacity constraints.

    · Recommend practical improvements to workflow, staffing, workspace organization, training, and production processes.

    · Assist with implementing new systems, equipment, products, procedures, and customer programs.

    · Track and communicate operational performance metrics.

    · Support increased prescription volume while maintaining quality, safety, service, and compliance standards.

    · Help standardize processes as the pharmacy expands its workforce, services, and production capacity.
