    JobSummary

    The Pharmacy Technician Lead provides operational leadership and coordination of daily pharmacy technician activities across multiple pharmacy practice areas. This position oversees workflow management, staff support, operational continuity, and compliance initiatives while ensuring the safe, accurate, and efficient delivery of medication services. The Pharmacy Technician Lead serves as a liaison between pharmacy technicians and pharmacy leadership, promotes medication safety, supports employee development, andadvancesdepartmentalqualityimprovementinitiatives.Thisrolemaintainsproficiencyinadvancedpharmacypracticeareasandprovidesoperationalcoverageasneededtosupportdepartmentalperformanceandstrategicobjectives.

    EssentialFunctions

    • Coordinatesdailypharmacytechnicianworkflow,includingworkloaddistribution,taskprioritization,staffassignments,andshiftcoverage.

    • Servesastheprimaryoperationalresourceforpharmacytechnicianstaffandfacilitateseffectivecommunicationbetweenshiftsandpracticeareas.

    • Monitorscompletion,accuracy,andtimelinessofpharmacytechnicianresponsibilitiestoensurecompliancewithdepartmentalproceduresandqualitystandards.

    • Providesreal-timecoaching,support,andguidancetopharmacytechnicianstoensuresafeandeffectivepharmacyoperations.

    • Maintainsproficiencyinalladvancedpharmacytechnicianfunctionsandprovidesoperationalcoverageacrosspharmacypracticeareasasneeded.

    • Performsadvancedpharmacytechniciandutiesinvolvingmedicationpreparation,sterilecompounding,hazardousdrughandling,inventorymanagement,controlledsubstanceprocesses,andmedicationdistributionactivities.

    • Supportscontinuityofpharmacyoperationsbycoordinatingshifthandoffsandmonitoringadherencetostaffingplansandassignments.

    • Servesasaliaisonbetweenpharmacytechniciansandpharmacyleadershipbycommunicatingoperationalneeds,concerns,recommendations,andperformanceopportunities.

    • Develops,implements,andreinforcesoperationalprocedures,workflowstandards,andbestpracticestopromotesafety,quality,andefficiency.

    • Supportstechnicianonboarding,orientation,training,competencyassessments,andongoingprofessionaldevelopmentactivities.

    • Identifiestrainingopportunitiesandassistswithworkforcedevelopment,careerprogression,andsuccessionplanninginitiatives.

    • Mentorspharmacytechniciansandservesasarolemodelforprofessionalism,accountability,teamwork,andcustomerservice.

    • Participatesindepartmentalqualityimprovementprojects,operationalaudits,workflowanalysis,andperformancemonitoringactivities.

    • Identifiesopportunitiestoimproveoperationalefficiency,servicequality,medicationsafety,andcustomersatisfaction.

    • Supportspharmacycomplianceinitiativesandmaintainsreadinessforregulatoryinspections,audits,andaccreditationsurveys.

    • Monitorssystems,workflows,andoperationalprocessestoidentifyandmitigaterisksthatmayimpactmedicationsafetyorservicequality.

    • Collaborateswithpharmacyleadership,pharmacists,clinicalteams,informationtechnology,compliance,andoperationaldepartmentsoncross-functionalinitiatives.

    • Supportspracticeadvancement,innovation,research,sharedgovernance,committeeparticipation,andprofessionaldevelopmentactivities.

    • PartnerswithPharmacyTechnicianSpecialistsandotherteammemberstosupportstrategicinitiativesandservicelineimprovements.

    • Performsotherdutiesasassigned.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Advanced knowledge of hospital pharmacy operations, medication distribution systems, and pharmacy technician practice standards.

    • Knowledge of sterile compounding, hazardous drug handling, controlled substance management, and medication safety practices.

    • Knowledge of pharmacy regulations, accreditation requirements, compliance standards, and quality assurance principles.

    • Ability to lead day-to-day pharmacy technician operations and coordinate workflow across multiple service areas.

    • Ability to train, mentor, coach, and develop pharmacy technicians.

    • Strong leadership, organizational, and team-building skills.

    • Ability to manage multiple priorities and respond effectively to changing operational needs.

    • Strong critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.

    • Ability to monitor workflow performance and implement process improvements.

    • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

    • Ability to collaborate effectively with pharmacy leadership, pharmacists, providers, and interdisciplinary healthcare teams.

    • Knowledge of pharmacy automation systems, inventory management systems, and medication-use technologies.

    • Ability to identify operational risks and develop effective solutions.

    • Strong customer service and relationship management skills.

    • Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to regulatory and organizational requirements.

    • Commitment to continuous professional growth and advancement of pharmacy technician practice.

    Education

    • High School Diploma or equivalent required.

    • Bachelor's Degree preferred.

    Field of Study

    • Healthcare, Pharmacy Technology, Business Administration, or related field preferred.

    Work Experience

    • Three years of experience within an integrated healthcare system consisting of three or more hospitals required.

    • Three years of contemporary hospital pharmacy experience required.

    • Previous experience in pharmacy operations leadership, technician training, workflow coordination, or advanced pharmacy practice areas preferred.

    Licenses and Certifications

    • Registered Pharmacy Technician (RPhT) required.

    • Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or National Healthcareer Association (NHA) required.
