Title: Lead Product Manager
Location : Rockville, MD or McLean, VA

The Lead Product Manager owns the vision, strategy, roadmap, and feature definition for multiple products and/or highly complex products. This role is responsible for defining and executing product strategy while planning and managing product features throughout the full product development lifecycle.

The Lead Product Manager manages product backlogs across a product group, prioritizes work based on user value and business impact, and makes product-related decisions aligned to stakeholder and organizational objectives. This individual operates with a high degree of autonomy, managing multiple product initiatives simultaneously while partnering closely with business stakeholders to understand pain points and develop strategic solutions.


Essential Job Functions

User Insight & Product Definition

  • Develop deep understanding of assigned business domains, product areas, and relevant data to inform key decisions.

  • Define product vision, strategy, and requirements for multiple and/or complex products.

  • Identify user needs and product gaps through research, data analysis, and stakeholder engagement.

  • Utilize available data or commission new research to uncover opportunities and inform product direction.

  • Conduct experiments and organize primary research to validate hypotheses and uncover additional user value.


Product Portfolio Management

  • Develop, manage, and own the product roadmap across multiple and/or complex products.

  • Make strategic trade-off decisions within and across product portfolios.

  • Demonstrate cross-product expertise to drive discovery and enable enterprise-level capabilities.

  • Build strong partnerships with stakeholder teams and interdependent functions.

  • Influence cross-functional leaders to drive efficiencies and alignment.

  • Collaborate closely with business stakeholders, UX/UI, architecture, and technology teams to ensure successful outcomes.

  • Participate in intake and governance processes within the assigned product domain.


Product Planning & Prioritization

  • Lead product planning efforts, including oversight of requirements documentation (user stories, use cases, acceptance criteria).

  • Maintain a prioritized backlog aligned to product strategy, resource capacity, and measurable user value.

  • Leverage data and analytics to inform backlog prioritization decisions.

  • Partner with UX/UI to define and refine user experience direction.

  • Establish release goals and oversee implementation and iteration planning.

  • Resolve escalated issues during planning and execution phases.


Product Development

  • Facilitate development activities by reviewing demos and validating acceptance criteria.

  • Provide UX/UI approvals for assigned products.

  • Track development progress and drive resolution of escalated risks, issues, and defects.

  • Identify risks to delivery timelines or product quality and develop mitigation plans.

  • Communicate risks and resolution plans effectively to stakeholders and leadership.


Launch

  • Lead large and complex product launches in coordination with cross-functional teams.

  • Develop launch plans and manage dependencies, risks, and blockers.

  • Coordinate formal user acceptance testing (UAT) when required.

  • Develop product documentation and training materials to support adoption.

  • Track and report on launch metrics and use feedback to drive continuous improvement.

  • Lead post-launch reviews and incorporate learnings into future releases.


Operate

  • Partner with internal and external stakeholders to identify, classify, and resolve product issues.

  • Develop and refine methods and metrics for measuring product success.

  • Monitor performance trends and user feedback to identify gaps or enhancement opportunities.

  • Contribute to discussions regarding product lifecycle decisions, including optimization or retirement planning.

  • Represent the product group in stakeholder meetings and business reviews.


Team Development & Continuous Improvement

  • Provide coaching and mentorship to junior product management team members.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional leaders to establish best practices and improve product development processes.

  • Stay informed on industry trends, emerging technologies, and product management best practices.

Education & Experience Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, Engineering, Communications, or related field (or equivalent experience).

  • 7+ years of experience in product management, project management, business analysis, program management, or product marketing.

  • 5+ years of experience in product and/or experience management.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong business acumen and strategic thinking ability.

  • Experience working in Agile software development environments.

  • Experience collaborating cross-functionally within complex organizations.

  • Experience presenting to and influencing senior leadership.

  • Ability to translate data insights into actionable business outcomes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Business Administration or related field.

  • CSPO or equivalent product certification.

  • Experience in highly regulated or complex industries.

  • Strong financial acumen.

  • Experience leading cross-functional initiatives and providing strategic direction.


Working Conditions

  • Primarily office-based work environment.

  • Extended hours may be required based on business needs.
