Position Summary

The Lead Ship Superintendent is responsible for leading the safe, efficient, and successful execution of complex Navy ship repair and modernization work. This position provides day-to-day production leadership across multiple work items, ship systems, trades, subcontractors, Alteration Installation Teams (AITs), and Ship's Force activities.

The Lead Ship Superintendent works as a key business partner to the Project Manager and is responsible for converting the project plan into executable production activities while maintaining schedule, cost, quality, safety, and technical requirements.

This position requires a strong ship-repair background, the ability to lead multiple Ship Superintendents and production teams, and a thorough understanding of the sequencing and integration required to execute complex modernization availabilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate Ship Superintendents, craft personnel, subcontractors, AITs, and supporting organizations across assigned work.
  • Develop and drive production plans that support key project milestones, critical path activities, testing, restoration, and vessel delivery.
  • Coordinate work across HM&E, structural, electrical, combat systems, and modernization activities to prevent production conflicts.
  • Ensure work is properly planned, sequenced, staffed, and executed in accordance with specifications, drawings, NAVSEA Standard Items, technical requirements, and contractual requirements.
  • Manage production performance against established budgets, schedules, and work-item milestones.
  • Monitor labor performance, productivity, CPI/SPI, earned value, and work-item progress and take corrective action when performance falls below plan.
  • Identify production constraints, emerging work, growth, material issues, access limitations, and technical conflicts early enough to minimize schedule impact.
  • Coordinate compartment closeout, restoration, testing, inspections, and certification requirements.
  • Support development and execution of Test and Inspection Plans, checkpoints, WAF requirements, and key event readiness.
  • Maintain accountability for shipboard safety, housekeeping, temporary services, access, and production readiness within assigned areas.
  • Participate in daily and weekly planning meetings and clearly communicate production status, risks, priorities, and recovery actions.
  • Mentor and develop Ship Superintendents and other production leaders while establishing consistent execution standards across the project.
  • Partner with Project Management, Planning, Engineering, Quality, Safety, Supply Chain, Contracts, and Production to resolve issues and maintain project momentum.
  • Build and maintain professional relationships with NAVSEA, Regional Maintenance Center representatives, Ship's Force, AITs, subcontractors, and other customer organizations.
  • Capture lessons learned and implement improvements that increase predictability and performance on future modernization availabilities.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of progressively responsible ship repair, shipbuilding, Navy modernization, or heavy marine production experience.
  • Demonstrated experience leading complex shipboard production activities and multiple trades or work packages.
  • Strong understanding of ship-repair planning, sequencing, testing, restoration, and production management.
  • Ability to read and interpret work specifications, drawings, technical manuals, procedures, and contractual requirements.
  • Experience managing labor budgets, schedules, production milestones, and performance.
  • Strong leadership, communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple organizations and competing priorities in a fast-paced shipyard environment.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and project planning/reporting tools.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting U.S. Navy surface-ship repair or modernization availabilities.
  • DDG/CG modernization experience strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of NAVSEA Standard Items, JFMM requirements, WAF/Tag-Out processes, testing, and shipboard restoration.
  • Experience coordinating AIT installations and complex HM&E/combat-system integration.
  • Familiarity with Earned Value Management, CPI, SPI, Estimate at Completion, and production performance metrics.
  • Previous experience as a Lead Ship Superintendent, Ship Superintendent, General Foreman, Production Manager, or similar ship-repair leadership position.
  • Experience developing and mentoring shipyard production leaders.

What Success Looks Like

The successful Lead Ship Superintendent does more than manage today''s production. This individual anticipates what the project will need weeks ahead, identifies constraints before they become schedule impacts, holds production teams accountable to the plan, and creates alignment between Production and Project Management.

Success is measured by safe execution, milestone performance, productivity, quality, successful testing and restoration, disciplined cost control, and ultimately delivering the vessel in accordance with contractual commitments.
