About the Department/Division:

The Lead School Social Worker is part of the Student & Family Services department. This department provides guidance and support for the district's school counselors, school social workers, school nurses, and students in transition.

Position Summary:

The Lead School Social Worker works to ensure that the Alamance-Burlington School System (ABSS) promotes and enhances the overall academic mission by managing services that strengthen home, school, and community partnerships. The School Social Work Program, through collaboration with the Student & Family Services team, addresses barriers to learning and achievement including mental health, homelessness, student behavior and student attendance. The Lead School Social Worker significantly contributes to the development of a healthy, safe, and caring environment. Such an environment is achieved by advancing the understanding of the emotional and social development of children and the influences of family, community, and cultural differences on student success along with the implementation of effective intervention strategies.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct staff development for the district's school social workers
  • Support and mentor school social workers
  • Establish and maintain community partnerships
  • Assist in leading the district crisis team
  • Serve as a collaborator for schools and PreK programs
  • Manage and analyze district data, particularly with regards to
  • Lead professional development that helps school and district staff better understand best practices with regards to school social work
  • Collaborate regularly with the district Student & Family Services team
  • Collaborate with child nutrition, transportation and other applicable departments within ABSS to ensure students have access to available services and resources
  • Maintain confidential and non-confidential records for documentation
  • Create and compile documentation as needed for records
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Social Work from a regionally accredited college or university

Required Qualifications:

  • Valid North Carolina driver's license
  • Hold or eligible to hold NC professional educator's license for school social work

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Social Work from a regionally accredited college or university

Leading & attending professional development

  • Provide regular professional development to the district's social workers
  • Attend professional development to learn best practices in documentation, reporting, and liaison responsibilities
  • Provide training to district staff on best practices related to school social work and mental health

Increasing student, family, community, and staff understanding of social work, mental health, and related resources

  • Educate staff and families as to mental health and other community resources
  • Participate in community collaborative events and committees
  • Provide district-level support for threat assessments
  • Assist in managing district crisis response

Collecting, analyzing, and disseminating data

  • Collect, analyze, and disseminate data related to attendance, school social worker SISP, donations and community partnerships, etc.

Increasing and strengthening community partnerships

  • Partner with local organizations such as the Department of Social Services, Crossroads, Vaya Health, etc.
  • Partner with universities to host school social work interns
  • Participate in community collaborative events and committees
  • Organize and manage the supply closets (food, hygiene, etc) at Sellars Gunn
