Job Description

About Total Sono

Total Sono supports OB/GYN practices by providing high-quality obstetrical and gynecological ultrasound services delivered by skilled sonographers and guided by perinatologists. Our team plays an important role in helping patients understand what is happening in their pregnancy or their health, offering clarity during moments that can feel exciting, vulnerable, or both. We combine clinical excellence with a warm, patient-first approach, and we're looking for a Lead Sonographer who wants to keep scanning while helping their teammates succeed.

What You'll Do
As a Lead Sonographer, you'll be a working lead: you'll continue to perform diagnostic ultrasound exams, with a focus on MFM and high-risk studies, while serving as a clinical resource and day-to-day point of guidance for your fellow sonographers. You'll be the first point of contact for questions and escalations at your site, give regular feedback and coaching, and help keep workflow, scheduling, and coverage running smoothly so patients get consistent, high-quality care. This is a team lead role, not a supervisory one. You'll guide and support your peers and help hold the team to our standards, but you won't hire, discipline, or terminate staff. Those decisions stay with the Manager, Ultrasound Technology, whom you'll report to.

Locations: North and Central Jersey locations (Union, Newark, Mountainside, Springfield, Maplewood, Bloomfield, Montclair, Clifton, Paramus, Hackensack)

On the clinical side, you'll:

  • Bring your MFM/OB expertise to routine and specialized exams (MFM, OB/GYN, and other requested imaging), including high-risk and complex studies, following Total Sono protocols and provider orders
  • Capture complete, high-quality images physicians can interpret with confidence
  • Use sound clinical judgment and partner closely with MFM physicians, referring providers, and internal teams
  • Put patients at ease while protecting their comfort, privacy, and dignity
  • Uphold infection control standards and run routine equipment checks
  • Monitor email, EMR, and clinical inboxes to keep patient communication timely

As a lead, you'll also:

  • Be the first point of contact for clinical and operational escalations, and the go-to resource for complex studies and real-time problem-solving, stepping in when physicians or management aren't immediately available
  • Give direct, constructive feedback and coach sonographers, including formal quarterly feedback and quality reviews alongside the Manager
  • Educate and support the team on policies, procedures, and protocols, and help hold staff accountable to them by addressing gaps in the moment and escalating ongoing concerns to the Manager
  • Onboard and support new team members
  • Provide first-level guidance on workflows and daily assignments
  • Coordinate scheduling and coverage across clinics, spotting gaps before they affect patients
  • Partner with scheduling, Patient Imaging Coordinators, and leadership to make the best use of ultrasound resources
  • Spot opportunities to improve workflow, consistency, and quality, and help with AIUM accreditation
  • Escalate concerns that could affect care, quality, or access

What Makes This Role Unique

  • Keep your hands-on clinical work while growing your leadership experience
  • Have a real voice in how our sites run, from patient flow to quality standards
  • Join a small, dedicated team where your expertise is recognized
  • Work in an environment built on patient comfort, clear communication, and compassion

Who You Are

  • Strong, experienced in MFM/OB ultrasound, including high-risk and complex studies
  • Graduate of an accredited Sonography program with 10+ years of ultrasound experience (outpatient preferred)
  • ARDMS certified, or willing to certify within 1 year of hire (Nuchal Translucency certification preferred)
  • A confident, approachable team leader (leadership experience preferred) who gives honest feedback, teaches policies and procedures, and holds colleagues to high standards, without needing formal supervisory authority
  • Organized, solution-oriented, and a strong communicator, verbally and in writing
  • Proficient with EMR, PACS, scheduling platforms, email, and standard office applications
  • Flexible with schedules and site coverage, and able to travel to assigned Total Sono locations and satellite sites

Why Work With Total Sono

  • Competitive rates starting from $60/hour
  • 5 days a week with one remote day a week when business needs allow. Hours can vary
  • A leadership opportunity without leaving patient care
  • Supportive workflow with perinatologist oversight
  • A team that values professionalism, empathy, and strong communication

If you're an experienced sonographer ready to lead by example and help your team do their best work, we'd love to meet you!
