Job Summary

The Lead Structured Cabling Technician is responsible for leading the installation, termination, testing, and troubleshooting of structured cabling systems for commercial and government projects. This role combines hands-on technical expertise with team leadership responsibilities to ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and according to industry standards. The Lead Structured Cabling Technician oversees copper and fiber infrastructure installations, coordinates project resources, manages materials, and serves as the primary on-site contact for project stakeholders. This is a contract-to-hire opportunity offering ongoing technical training and career advancement potential. Work is based in Reno, Nevada. Local candidates are preferred; however, relocation candidates will be considered.

Job Responsibilities

  • Install, route, terminate, and test structured cabling systems, including CAT5e, CAT6, and fiber optic infrastructure.

  • Dress, route, label, and manage cables in accordance with industry standards and project specifications.

  • Install cable pathways including J-hooks, D-rings, cable trays, ladder racks, and related support systems.

  • Terminate cables at patch panels, jacks, keystones, and modular plugs.

  • Install and mount wireless access points, fiber ONTs, network switches, racks, and related network equipment.

  • Build, organize, and maintain telecommunications rooms and IT closets, including grounding systems and cable management solutions.

  • Perform fiber optic splicing, testing, and troubleshooting using industry-standard testing equipment.

  • Read, interpret, and execute work according to blueprints, drawings, and technical specifications.

  • Maintain compliance with OSHA regulations and established safety procedures.

  • Lead and supervise structured cabling teams to ensure quality workmanship and timely project completion.

  • Serve as the primary on-site point of contact for contractors, project teams, and clients.

  • Conduct safety meetings and enforce adherence to jobsite safety requirements.

  • Coordinate material procurement, inventory management, and resource allocation for assigned projects.

  • Forecast labor requirements and support project scheduling efforts.

  • Review project changes and communicate scope modifications to project management.

  • Ensure installations comply with applicable industry standards and project requirements.

  • Provide training, mentorship, and performance guidance to team members.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.

  • Minimum of seven years of experience in commercial structured cabling, low-voltage systems, or data cable installation.

  • Strong knowledge of structured cabling installation practices and industry standards.

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and technical documentation.

  • Excellent leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

  • OSHA 10 certification preferred.

  • Scissor lift and boom lift certification preferred.

  • Hilti, fall protection, and confined space certifications preferred.

  • Ability to work at heights, on ladders, and in confined spaces.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and move up to 75 pounds.

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and perform physical labor for extended periods.

Education

  • High school diploma or GED required.

Work Experience

  • Minimum of seven years of experience in commercial structured cabling, low-voltage systems, telecommunications infrastructure, or related field experience.

  • Experience leading installation teams and managing structured cabling projects preferred.

  • Experience with fiber optic installation, splicing, testing, and certification preferred.
