Lead Substation Engineer

Overview
Our client, a leading employee-owned engineering consulting firm specializing in power, renewable energy, transportation, and water infrastructure, is seeking a Lead Substation Engineer to lead the design and execution of complex utility and renewable energy substation projects. This role is responsible for technical leadership, substation protection and control design, engineering studies, and project delivery from concept through commissioning. The ideal candidate will have a PE license, 7+ years of substation engineering experience, and expertise in protection and control systems, substation studies, and multidisciplinary project leadership. This full-time remote opportunity is available to candidates located anywhere within the United States.

Pay rate: $123,200 - $159,650

Responsibilities:

• Lead electrical engineering activities for utility, renewable energy, and power substation projects.
• Plan, schedule, coordinate, and execute complex phases of substation engineering projects.
• Develop design recommendations, modifications, and technical solutions for utility substations and relay protection/control systems.
• Perform engineering calculations and technical analyses to support substation design.
• Review, produce, and approve substation design drawings, including one-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, and control panel elevations.
• Perform AC and DC substation studies and evaluate system performance.
• Provide technical leadership, guidance, and mentorship to engineers and project team members.
• Lead multidisciplinary project teams through estimating, proposal development, detailed design, commissioning, and construction support activities.
• Support on-site commissioning, testing, startup, and energization efforts as needed.
• Apply industry standards, engineering best practices, and emerging technologies to improve project execution and design quality.

Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program or equivalent.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
• 7+ years of electrical engineering experience, preferably in substation engineering.
• Experience leading complex substation projects from concept through commissioning and construction support.
• Strong knowledge of substation protection and control design principles and industry standards.
• Ability to develop, review, and interpret substation engineering drawings and documentation.
• Experience performing AC and DC substation studies.
• Knowledge of substation physical equipment and apparatus.
• Effective leadership and mentoring capabilities.
• Strong verbal and written communication, organizational, and time management skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Ability to adopt and leverage evolving technology and AI tools to improve workflows and project delivery.
• Ability to travel up to 15% as required.
• Valid driver's license preferred.
• Knowledge of relay settings, NEC requirements, and commissioning/construction support activities preferred.
• Must be authorized to work permanently in the United States.
