Lead Technician, Field Services

This Opportunity

Leads field operations for complex high voltage construction, environmental, and infrastructure projects by providing expert technical guidance, hands-on execution, and operational oversight. Applies extensive field experience and specialized knowledge to manage day-to-day field activities, troubleshoot technical challenges, and uphold quality and safety standards. Coordinate with Inspectors, field engineers, construction managers, and the QA/QC to ensure field tasks are delivered efficiently and in compliance with regulatory and client requirements. Supports project delivery by mentoring field inspectors, managing site logistics, and facilitating effective communication between field crews and project leadership.

Your Impact

• Lead daily field operations for large or complex projects, ensuring adherence to technical specifications, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
• Coordinate mobilization, equipment deployment, and material delivery to ensure work is completed on time and within scope.
• Oversee high-level field tasks including sampling, testing, system installation, inspections, troubleshooting and QA/QC reporting.
• Act as primary field liaison with clients, contractors, inspectors, and project managers to communicate progress, risks, and technical concerns.
• Interpret and apply site plans, design drawings, specifications, and permits to ensure field accuracy and compliance.
• Provide oversight for complex testing activities such as slump, air entrainment, temperature, utility performance, and construction QA/QC.
• Lead the operation, for groups of field inspectors .
• Implement and reinforce site-specific health and safety protocols, job hazard analyses, and quality control procedures.
• Manage field crews, assigning tasks, monitoring performance, and ensuring consistency across work streams.
• Mentor junior and mid-level technicians in technical procedures, safety practices, and proper documentation.
• Develop or review field documentation including logs, chain-of-custody records, site sketches, and digital data entries.
• Support corrective actions by troubleshooting equipment or procedural issues and identifying practical solutions.
• Track site progress, test results, material usage, and labor productivity to support project reporting and billing.
• Monitor contractor compliance with site safety plans, environmental controls, and work quality expectations.
• Assist in implementing field changes or modifications in collaboration with design and technical staff.
• Lead field readiness planning includes, site access coordination, utility marking, and weather contingency measures.
• Participate in pre-construction meetings, regulatory inspections, and client walkthroughs as the senior field representative.
• Ensure accurate data collection, reporting, and integration with project systems and internal databases.
• Maintain oversight of fleet vehicles, tools, materials, and inventory to support site productivity.
• Coordinate with procurement and logistics teams to source equipment or materials as needed.
• Contribute to incident response, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement initiatives across projects.
• Maintain a strong safety culture and encourage proactive hazard recognition and reporting.
• Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
• Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum of 11 years of relevant post-education experience in field services, including environmental monitoring, construction inspection, or utility operations.
• Extensive knowledge of environmental and infrastructure field procedures, regulations, and equipment.
• Proven ability to lead field teams and serve as the senior field representative on complex or multi-phase projects.
• Strong understanding of federal, state, and local environmental regulations, including OSHA, EPA, and DOT standards.
• Advanced skills in operating, calibrating, and troubleshooting complex field instrumentation and systems.
• Ability to plan, prioritize, and manage field logistics and resources across multiple concurrent workstreams.
• Experience coordinating directly with clients, contractors, regulators, and internal stakeholders.
• Strong documentation skills, including preparation and review of technical logs, data tables, and compliance forms.
• Proficiency in reading and interpreting engineering plans, design drawings, and permit conditions.
• Demonstrated ability to mentor and train junior staff and provide constructive technical feedback.
• Knowledge of site health and safety protocols, risk mitigation strategies, and emergency response procedures.
• Experience leading field QA/QC activities including test verification, contractor oversight, and nonconformance resolution.
• Skilled in managing field testing for soils, materials, water, or concrete under regulatory or project-specific standards.
• Capable of recognizing and resolving on-site issues related to sequencing, access, schedule, or technical constraints.
• Proficient in using GPS systems, mobile field apps, and digital reporting platforms.
• Familiarity with construction techniques, dewatering systems, erosion control, and utility installation.
• Ability to perform physical labor, including lifting, bending, standing, and walking for extended periods.
• Valid driver's license and clean driving record, with the ability to travel regionally as needed.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively lead crews and represent WSP in the field.
• Working knowledge of material tracking, site progress metrics, and labor hour monitoring.
• Demonstrated leadership in fostering a strong safety culture and quality-first approach in field operations.
• Understanding of project budgeting, scheduling, and logistics as it relates to field execution.
• Reliable, detail-oriented, and able to operate effectively with minimal supervision in fast-paced environments.

Preferred Qualifications

• Associate''s Degree.
• Technical certification or associate degree in construction management, environmental technology, or a related discipline.
• OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER and First Aid/CPR certification.
• Experience with federally regulated projects including Superfund, brownfields, or major infrastructure programs.
• Training in construction quality management (CQM), erosion control, or confined space entry.
• Familiarity with GIS platforms, AutoCAD markups, or digital inspection workflows.
