Job Description

Lead Welder / Lead Welding Mechanic
Job Status: Full-Time
Schedule: Monday–Friday, starting at approximately 6:00–7:00 AM. Typically 8–10 hours per day. Currently averaging approximately 48 hours per week. Overtime and weekends may be required.
Travel: Primarily local jobsites
Positions Supervised: Crew of 6+ employees

Position Summary
The Lead Welder / Lead Welding Mechanic is a hands-on leadership position responsible for performing and overseeing commercial welding and mechanical installation work. This individual will lead a crew of at least six employees, coordinate daily field activities, read and interpret construction drawings and submittals, and ensure work is completed safely, accurately, and on schedule.

Candidates may come from a welder or fitter background, but must have strong mechanical experience and demonstrated experience leading field crews.

Passing a 6G welding test/certification is mandatory.

 

Job Responsibilities

Essential Responsibilities
Lead and direct a field crew of 6 or more welders, fitters, mechanics, and/or helpers.
Perform hands-on welding, fitting, fabrication, and mechanical installation work.
Weld black iron, stainless steel, structural steel, roof frames, piping, and other related materials.
Perform TIG, MIG, and ARC welding as required.
Read and interpret blueprints, mechanical drawings, construction plans, specifications, and submittals.
Lay out and fit materials according to drawings and field conditions.
Coordinate labor, materials, equipment, and daily work assignments.
Ensure crew members understand daily production expectations and job priorities.
Monitor workmanship and ensure installations meet project specifications and quality standards.
Coordinate with General Contractors, supervisors, and other trades to maintain job progress.
Identify field issues and make appropriate adjustments to keep work moving.
Measure materials and assist with determining material requirements for projects.
Train and mentor welders, mechanics, fitters, and helpers through hands-on instruction.
Enforce company and jobsite safety requirements.
Operate or work from equipment such as scissor lifts, ladders, and other construction equipment as required.
Maintain productivity while ensuring work is completed safely and correctly.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications
6G certification/test – mandatory.
Demonstrated mechanical experience in a commercial or industrial construction environment.
Proven experience successfully leading a crew of at least 6 employees.
Strong ability to read prints, blueprints, mechanical drawings, and submittals.
Experience as a welder and/or fitter.
Experience with TIG, MIG, and ARC welding.
Ability to independently lay out, fit, weld, and complete assigned work.
Strong understanding of commercial construction and field installation practices.
Ability to coordinate manpower, materials, and equipment.
Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Valid driver's license.
Physical Requirements
This is a physically demanding field position. Candidates must be able to:

Stand and walk for extended periods.
Frequently climb, bend, kneel, squat, reach, and work from elevated positions.
Frequently lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
Occasionally lift heavier materials with assistance or appropriate equipment.
Work safely from ladders, lifts, and other construction equipment.
Work in varying indoor and outdoor jobsite conditions.
Work Environment
Work is performed primarily on active commercial construction jobsites. Conditions may vary daily and can include exposure to heat, cold, noise, dust, welding fumes, elevated work areas, and other typical construction-site conditions.
