About Us

Whitby School is a positive, warm, and welcoming school where pupils aim to do their very best and take pride in their achievements. By constantly challenging our pupils to excel, we nurture aspirations and cultivate a lifelong love of learning in our young people.

Our four key values - Ambition, Courage, Character, and Endeavour - are the pillars of everything we do. Whitby School is proud to hold the future within its walls. Every lesson, every conversation, every act of kindness helps shape the leaders, thinkers, and citizens of tomorrow.

Our motto, Ad finem terrae - To the ends of the earth - reminds us that the world is wide, full of opportunity, and waiting to be explored. We want our children to aim for exciting, far-reaching goals, knowing that their journey can take them anywhere.

We are looking for colleagues who will provide a creative, safe, and caring environment where every child is known and cared for as an individual. In this climate, every young person can thrive as they develop in personality, character and intellect and become a highly successful learner and individual.

Our opportunity

Meeting the needs of pupils at Whitby School has always been a very important part of our ethos. Whitby School is an inclusive school and aims to provide the support for all pupils. You can play a part in making learning accessible.

In this role, you'll be the hero for students who need a little extra help. You will help pupils access learning and develop their understanding, supporting them to complete tasks themselves wherever possible.

You'll work closely with small groups and individual students, guided by our amazing class teachers and leadership team. It's all about creating a supportive and dynamic learning environment where every student can thrive.

This role offers great variety and balance - you may work across school as needed, or provide targeted regular support to specific pupils, allowing you to see how they grow and thrive.

Key Duties

  • Support pre-planned learning activities as directed by the teacher.
  • Provide in-class, small group, and one-to-one, support for students, under the direction of senior staff.
  • Provide insight and input to allow the class teacher to monitor and record learning, behaviour, participation, progress and achievement.
  • Support pupils with special educational needs through assisting with the delivery of specific learning programmes.
  • Support the facilitation of pupils' access to educational provision as indicated by their Education, Health and Care Plan.

You will have:

  • Experience appropriate to working with children in a learning environment.
  • Have experience of supporting and working with students with a range of additional learning needs.
  • Good literacy, numeracy and interpersonal skills.
  • Relevant NVQ Level 2 qualification or equivalent i.e. English and maths skills at level 2 / GCSE pass (Supporting teaching & learning specific qualifications are not essential but may be an advantage)

We can offer you

  • A supportive, collaborative team who openly share ideas and best practice.
  • A school community that prides itself on engagement, generosity, dignity and inspiration.
  • Access to Mental health and Wellbeing support services.
  • Opportunities for CPD and career progression.

We encourage applications from candidates who have a passion for supporting students in their education with individual needs and who wish to work in a setting which offers rewards and challenges, where no two days are the same.
