Job Description:

Position Summary

The Lyles School of Civil and Construction Engineering seeks a highly qualified and motivated Lecturer to support undergraduate education in Geomatics, Surveying, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing, and Geospatial Engineering. The successful candidate will primarily teach undergraduate courses in geomatics and related areas, with an emphasis on integrating theory, computation, instrumentation, and hands-on laboratory experiences.

The Lecturer will contribute to instruction in courses focused on surveying principles, geospatial data acquisition and analysis, photogrammetry, laser scanning, GIS, GPS/GNSS, and engineering measurements, while fostering student engagement and practical problem-solving skills.

Essential Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Teach undergraduate courses in Geomatics Engineering, including topics such as:
  • Principles of surveying and engineering measurements
  • Horizontal and vertical control systems
  • Differential leveling, traverse computations, and survey adjustment
  • GPS/GNSS data collection and geodesy
  • Topographic mapping and construction layout
  • Horizontal and vertical curve computation
  • Error analysis, uncertainty propagation, and observational adjustment
  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS), including map projections, spatial analysis, geospatial data models, and GIS software applications
  • Remote sensing fundamentals, including photogrammetry, georeferencing, laser scanning (LiDAR), and 3D geospatial data collection
  • Geospatial data processing and visualization using contemporary software tools.
  • Develop and deliver engaging lectures, laboratory exercises, assignments, and assessments that support student learning outcomes.
  • Coordinate and supervise laboratory instruction involving:
  • Surveying instrumentation (e.g., total stations, levels, GNSS/GPS receivers)
  • GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS or equivalent)
  • Photogrammetric and laser scanning systems
  • Data processing and engineering computation tools.
  • Mentor and coordinate teaching assistants supporting laboratory and recitation activities.
  • Maintain course materials, laboratory manuals, and online instructional resources.
  • Contribute to curriculum enhancement and modernization in geomatics and geospatial engineering education.
  • Support ABET-aligned learning outcomes related to engineering problem-solving, experimentation, data analysis, and interpretation.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree (minimum) or Ph.D. (preferred) in Geomatics Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geospatial Engineering, Surveying Engineering, Remote Sensing, Geographic Information Science, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in several of the following areas:
  • Surveying and geomatics
  • GIS and spatial analysis
  • GPS/GNSS and geodesy
  • Photogrammetry and remote sensing
  • Laser scanning/LiDAR
  • Engineering measurements and mapping
  • Experience using modern geospatial and surveying software and instrumentation.
  • Strong communication and instructional skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior university-level teaching experience in geomatics, surveying, GIS, or civil engineering courses.
  • Professional experience in surveying, geospatial engineering, mapping, or related industries.
  • Licensure as a Professional Surveyor (PS/PLS) or equivalent credential is desirable.
  • Experience supervising laboratory activities and field exercises.
  • Familiarity with ABET-accredited engineering programs.

Teaching Expectations

The Lecturer is expected to teach and coordinate undergraduate instruction in geomatics-related courses, maintain regular office hours, engage in student mentoring, and participate in departmental service activities related to education and curriculum development.

Desired Areas of Expertise

Candidates with demonstrated strengths in a combination of the following areas are especially encouraged to apply:
