Job opportunity

The Legislative Service Commission (LSC) is seeking legislation processing specialists to join our team. Legislation processing specialists provide typing, proofreading, and final processing of legislative documents for members of the Ohio General Assembly. Duties include:

  • Typing, formatting, and team proofreading of legislative documents, including bills, amendments, and resolutions in custom software and letters in Microsoft Word;

  • Electronically processing final versions of legislative documents;

  • Applying styles and ensuring that proper bill drafting rules have been applied;

  • Monitoring an assignment database to facilitate prompt assignment completion;

  • Entering and verifying data as needed;

  • Staffing the bill preparation area or other support areas on a rotating basis during scheduled night work and at other times when night or weekend work is required;

  • Assisting other LSC processing specialists in providing typing, proofreading, and final processing of legislative support documents, including bill and fiscal analyses and research memoranda;

  • Providing customer service to, answering inquiries of, and otherwise assisting LSC staff;

  • Maintaining availability to work seasonal scheduled and, at times, unscheduled overtime, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Salary and benefits

Characteristics of a strong candidate

  • Strong interest in confidential, non-partisan public service;

  • Ability to accurately type and enter data, proofread typed material, recognize errors and make corrections, and to organize materials in alphanumeric order;

  • Flexibility to recognize and respond to changing priorities, including managing rush assignments;

  • Customer service orientation, with the ability to work collaboratively and effectively in a group setting, and to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;

  • Willingness to acquire knowledge of bill drafting and agency-specific practices and procedures (developed after employment).

Minimum qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent;

  • Proficiency with word processing, particularly with Microsoft Word, including rapid and accurate typing experience;

  • Excellent grammar, punctuation, spelling, and proofreading skills;

  • Problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal skills;

  • Ability to work overtime, scheduled and unscheduled, occasionally on short notice;

  • Strong attendance record;

  • Willingness to limit public activity and to not give any appearance of bias in work.
