Ciena Optical Technician - Level 3/4

Summary
Technician with optical experience working in a Central Office environment. Tasks require technician to be able to install optical equipment in a rack, have excellent cable management skills, and be considered a Level 3 or higher skilled tester. Technician must have knowledge of and experience with basic building and construction of product hardware architecture at the customer site. Ability to lead, supervise and direct assignments to meet delivery commitment to customer.

Responsibilities
• Have a minimum of 3 years' accumulated experience or equivalent as determined by the Installation Supplier's training process and demonstrated to the TC representative upon request, proficiency in the system (Network Elements 1, 2, 3, and 4) being worked on, or hold a Certificate of Completion from a training facility providing an appropriate curriculum.
• Inventory the hardware and job-related material.
• Physically build the product following the hardware job specifications and drawings working independently.
• Install Ciena hardware as required on customer sites and perform preliminary testing of associated hardware to support successful job completion with high Ciena product families.
• Be capable of performing the same work operations/job activities without supervision or direction.
• Be capable of performing the Installation Supplier's in-charge person.
• Be capable of performing additions, removals, and modifications on working equipment and circuits.
• Skill Level 4 work operations/job activities may include:
o Circuits modifications
o Software additions or upgrades
o Power transition work
o Addition or removal of batteries
• Addition or removal of circuits on working power distribution sources.
• Equipment testing and turn-up.
• Lead, supervise and direct assignments. Understand and use established safety practices.
• Understand quality requirements and can implement quality control processes.
• Perform power verification and preliminary hardware testing of out of service equipment (OOS)
• Read and stay current on installation documentation.
• Read and interpret engineering specs, prints, and drawings.
• Demonstrate proper use of tools.
• Perform all physical and mechanical installation activities.
• Maintain on-site job records and administration tracking.
• Perform power and grounding installations on equipment and small power plants.
• Perform power verification and power-up of equipment.
• Plan, manage logistics and execute physical installation of hardware on one or multiple sites.
• Physically lift a minimum of 25 pounds (12 kilos)

Basic Qualifications

• High School degree
• Associate degree or bachelor's degree preferred
• Minimum of 2 years' experience working with Ciena Optical equipment
• Hands on experience installing Ciena 6500 equipment
• Hands on experience testing Ciena 6500 equipment
• Is considered a level 3 or 4 installer and/or tester
• Knowledge working in central office environments
• Good Understanding of Telcordia installation standards
