Job Summary:

LEWIS CORRECTIONAL LIEUTENANT ANNOUNCEMENT OPEN TO CURRENT ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS, REHABILITATION & REENTRY EMPLOYEES ONLY

IMPORTANT DEADLINES:

  • Oral Board start date: TBD

  • Completion of the Basic Leadership Academy is required by the time an offer is made, otherwise the candidate will be bypassed.

 

SECTION 1: SPECIAL SELECTION FACTOR(S)-THE FOLLOWING IS REQUIRED - 

  • Two years of experience as a Correctional Sergeant with the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation, and Reentry. 

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: 

  • PERFORMANCE EVALUATION – Must receive a rating of meets expectations or better. 

  • SUSPENSION – Ineligible to apply for one year from the date of suspension. 

  • VOLUNTARY DEMOTIONS – Employees accepting a voluntary demotion shall be required to remain in the classification/position requested for a period of at least two years before being considered for appointment to any other position. Voluntary demotion applicants must have an approved voluntary demotion memo on file with CPR to be considered for a job offer. No job offers will be made without an approved voluntary demotion. 

  • DEMOTIONS (DISCIPLINARY) – Any employee who has been demoted one level shall be ineligible to apply for a promotional opportunity for two years from the date of the demotion. If demoted more than one level, the employee shall be ineligible to apply for a promotional opportunity for three years from the date of the demotion. A demotion received after the promotional process has started and prior to the promotion shall result in the permanent removal from that CPR. Once removed from a CPR for a demotion, the applicant shall not be eligible to compete for a Correctional Officer Series position until two or three years, depending on the number of levels demoted, after the date of the demotion. The first day served of the demotion shall be considered the effective date of the demotion.

SECTION 2: EVALUATION AND TESTING PROCESS - 

Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of training and experience. Study references/resources are posted on the ADC Internet and Intranet websites. All relevant information is subject to verification. Please note the following:  

  • Each promotion or different position with the same employer must be listed separately on the resume and must include adequate work history identifying experience, duties, qualifications, selective requirements, and/or preferences must be reflected on the resume in order to receive applicable credit.

  • Applicants who meet the KSAs and selective preferences will be invited to participate in the oral board.

SECTION 4: REGISTER/JOB OFFERS -  

  • When job offers are extended, they are made to candidates in rank order.

 

  • Employees who are offered a position and have been out of security positions for more than two years will be required to attend COTA training.

NOTE: If you are currently working outside of the correctional series you will have to undergo the correctional officer hire procedures. The procedures may include medical/physical, psychological evaluation, updated background investigation, and the completion of the Correctional Officer Training Academy.    

SECTION 5: EDUCATIONAL STIPEND - 

Positions in this classification are eligible for an educational stipend: Associate’s Degree 2.5%; Bachelor's Degree: 5%; Master's Degree or above: 7.5%. If you have completed one of these degrees, submit the Education Supplement-Security form Education Supplement and documentation of your degree as noted on the form with your application. If eligible and appointed, the stipend amount will be effective on the date of your appointment. Education requests submitted after the date of appointment are effective at the beginning of the pay period they are received in personnel. This stipend is subject to available funding and may be canceled at any time.  

Job Duties:

Works under general supervision from a higher authority. Has the authority to assign/reassign staff to maintain security and control; serve in absence of Chief of Security as appropriate; effect actions to maintain safety and health of staff and inmates; evaluate staff and prepare reports of recommendations. Serves as officer-in-charge of multiple shifts of Correctional Sergeants and Correctional Officer II’s performing security of inmates; schedules and assigns/reassigns staff to maintain prescribed security, order and discipline and provision of special/support services; inspects areas for safety of staff and inmates. Work product consists of trained and functioning units of staff; security, order and discipline maintained for institution; required reports prepared and submitted; work unit procedures in place and adhered to; administrative tasks completed. Responsible for assisting in developing timely and effective work schedules, procedures and post orders; the prescribed security, custody and control of the internal/external perimeters of an institution and evaluating and reporting of the security and communication networks. Individual positions may be responsible for some or all of the listed duties and/or other related duties. Performs duties and exercises delegated responsibility and authority as the first line officer managing and supervising multiple units (shifts) of correctional sergeants and correctional Officer IIs in maintaining security, custody, and discipline of inmates at an adult institution. Devises a work schedule for self and staff on a periodic basis. Conduct inspections of security, safety, and sanitation conditions; detect problems; notifies proper response team; writes reports. Develops duty (shift) rosters for staff; posts and assures compliance; assigns/reassigns staff as required to maintain security and custody. Interacts with staff and inmate populations, providing paraprofessional counseling and crisis intervention; refers cases to appropriate care and treatment team; writes reports from review by officials; assists as appropriate. Writes, or assists in writing, recommending security, custody, and disciplinary procedures and practices. Serves as a member of inmates’ discipline and classification committees; reviews reports of discipline activity; makes recommendations; coordinates with unit’s Inmates’ Classification Specialist and assures that inmates are provided due process and timely movements as indicated; briefs security staff and assures compliance with instructions. Provides or oversees appropriate training for security staff; directs and motivates staff to seek and attend in-service training to improve or enhance work. Reviews and monitors security practices and procedures to ensure prescribed inmate accountability; recommends and assures changes, as appropriate. Attends staff meetings of units; as chairperson, directs discussions; listens, resolves problems; leads and participates in decision-making. Confers with superior, discusses problems, including employee and inmate relationships; assists in problem solving and decision-making. Performs related work as required.

WORK CONDITIONS: Shift work; exposure to hazards associated with duties maintaining security, order and discipline of inmates in and outside of an institution.

Federal, State and agency laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures governing controls of inmates; methods, techniques and practices of paraprofessional counseling and crisis intervention for inmates; principles and practices of supervision and work leadership; The use of self-defense and use of weapons and related defense and control equipment; practices and techniques of observing, detecting and defusing adverse actions by inmate populations.

SKILLS IN/ABILITY TO: Applying and interpreting security, custody and discipline measures for an institution; applying methods and techniques of paraprofessional counseling and crisis intervention for inmates and staff; applying methods and techniques of supervising; using and training in self-defense and use of weapons and related defense/control equipment; observing, detecting and defusing adverse actions by inmates; basic first aid measures, and use of devices for self and staff protection from serious health disorders; verbal and written communications as required by the duties and assignments in a correctional setting; interpersonal relationships within a correctional setting; maintaining a calm and even temperament during emergency situations.

Some positions require a medical/physical evaluation, psychological examinations, pre-employment drug screening, and undergo a background investigation prior to appointment; a current Arizona driver’s license appropriate to the assignment is required at the time of appointment. Requires possession of and ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver's license appropriate to the assignment. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver's license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any required driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12.)
