About the Library:

The Library & Cultural Arts Department of the City of Carlsbad provides educational, informational, and cultural services for the community, and contributes to a high quality of life by supporting lifelong learning, the pursuit of knowledge, and an environment conducive to community gathering. The Library & Cultural Arts Department operates three public facilities: the Carlsbad City Library on Dove Lane, the Georgina Cole Library and the Library Learning Center. The department also includes the Cultural Arts division which presents public art throughout the community. The Carlsbad City Library is also home to the Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium, George and Patricia Gowland Meeting Room and the Cannon Art Gallery which support a variety of visual and performing arts programs, arts education and cultural arts services.

About the Position:

The Library is currently seeking multiple librarian positions in various work areas-Public Services which includes Adult & Teen Services, Children's Services and Genealogy & Carlsbad History. Library & Cultural Arts (L&CA) staff assist patrons with library services, provide technology assistance, manage projects, present programs and instruction, and coordinate outreach and other programming efforts.

The ideal candidates will have proven abilities and experience providing library services and programs to patrons. The Library is looking for enthusiastic professionals with excellent interpersonal and communication skills; an outstanding work ethic, attitude, sense of teamwork; and flexibility to work with new services and outreach initiatives. They will also be able to receive, internalize and grow from feedback. This individual should enjoy and feel comfortable developing and maintaining relationships with patrons and building partnerships within the community.

Key Responsibilities

The following are examples of the types of job duties that may be found in Library Professional roles:

Public Services

  • Provides excellent customer service Responds to information requests that are in person, over the phone, via chat, or other virtual media to answer questions, locate information, and train the public in using the librarys resources
  • Recommends and locates library materials appropriate to library users needs
  • Provides in-depth instruction in the use of various print, electronic and online resources
  • Analyzes community needs, develop project proposals for library services and presents to management; implement and manage special projects
  • Performs outreach services to community organizations and educational institutions to increase awareness of library resources and materials
  • Develop and deliver training and education workshops and classes, for library and city related needs
  • Promotes libraries, library services and library programs

Professional Duties

  • Keeps current on library trends by reading and/or reviewing data, statistical information, and professional materials, and by participating in professional associations and conferences to identify emerging community issues
  • Takes a leadership role in mentoring staff in current library skills, systems and practices
  • Recruits, selects, schedules and trains hourly employees and volunteers
  • Supervises the work of hourly staff engaged in providing various library services
  • Leads and participates on committees, teams and projects
  • Identifies and resolves difficult interactions involving members of the public by interpreting, explaining, and enforcing Library rules, policies and procedures; may contact law enforcement or other emergency services during critical events or safety issues
  • Acts as person-in-charge on evenings and weekends
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Experience & Education

An equivalent combination of the education and experience listed below:

  • A Masters of Library Science or a Masters of Library and Information Systems from an American Library Association Accredited library school.
  • Two years of library work experience is preferred to qualify for the Librarian level.

May require specialized training in assigned division.
