Job Description

The Librarian III – Youth Services Coordinator manages Children’s, Teen, and Bookmobile Services system-wide. 

Essential Functions:

  • Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates Youth Services staff.
  • Provides exceptional customer service to external and internal customers. Responds to and resolves patron questions or concerns.
  • Establishes and maintains partnerships in support of the library’s mission with local schools, businesses, organizations, and other agencies.
  • Manages children’s collection development system-wide. Selects books and other materials, coordinates weeding, and reviews Teen Librarian’s materials selection.  
  • Plans, conducts, promotes, and evaluates Youth Services programs and outreach with assistance of staff.
  • Coordinates Youth Services programming system-wide. Reviews and approves branch programs; coordinates training of branch staff providing Youth Services.
  • Researches, writes, and implements grants. Conducts fundraising and prepares funding requests for Friends group.
  • Requests supplies for programs and services; maintains inventory and organization of equipment and supplies.
  • Reviews departmental communications, including press releases, fliers, social media posts, etc.
  • Participates in the library’s ongoing training program.

Non-Essential Functions:

  • Ensures coverage of Children’s Services desk; fills in on nights and weekends as needed. Serves as HQ Manager-on-Duty when needed.
  • Represents the library system at community events, outreach programs, conferences and meetings as needed.
  • Advises Library Director on policies, procedures, and manuals.
  • Assesses community needs, plans future library services, and assists Library Director in planning and determining departmental budget needs.
  • Maintains current knowledge of, and shares with staff, current library service trends and related developments. 
  • Performs all other related duties as required.

Qualifications: Education and Work Experience

  • Master’s Degree in Library Science from an A.L.A. accredited graduate program; 4+ years of relevant professional experience including management and supervision, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge and skills.
  • Proficient with computers, Microsoft Office/Google Workspace, and office equipment.
  • Must possess or qualify for a Professional Librarian’s Certificate from the South Carolina State Library.
  • Must possess a valid South Carolina driver’s license.
