    Librarian Middle School - 2026/2027

    Description:

    The Middle School Teacher Librarian is an educator, instructional partner, literacy leader, and school library program leader who creates an inclusive and engaging environment that supports reading, inquiry, research, critical thinking, creativity, and student learning. The Teacher Librarian works collaboratively with students, educators, administrators, and the district library team to ensure that the school library is an active and integral part of teaching and learning.

    Responsibilities:

    • Leads the organization, development, and ongoing evaluation of the school library program and learning commons.

    • Creates a welcoming, inclusive, student-centered library environment that encourages curiosity, exploration, collaboration, independent learning, and a sense of belonging.

    • Promotes a strong culture of reading throughout the school and encourages students to read widely for learning, personal interest, enjoyment, and growth.

    • Provides students with access to a broad, current, engaging, and diverse collection of print, digital, and multimedia resources representing a variety of perspectives, experiences, interests, cultures, identities, and reading levels.

    • Develops, evaluates, maintains, and regularly updates the library collection based on curriculum needs, student interests, professional reviews, circulation data, collection analysis, and established district policies.

    • Teaches students information literacy, research, inquiry, media literacy, source evaluation, citation, copyright, and the ethical use and creation of information.

    • Helps students develop the skills necessary to distinguish credible information from misinformation, evaluate sources and claims, recognize bias, and make informed decisions in an increasingly complex information environment.

    • Teaches and models responsible digital citizenship, online safety, privacy, copyright, and ethical participation in digital environments.

    • Supports students in understanding the responsible and ethical use of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, as tools for learning, research, and creation.

    • Collaborates with classroom teachers and specialists to design and teach research, literacy, inquiry, and interdisciplinary learning experiences connected to curriculum and student needs.

    • Provides instruction to individuals, small groups, and classes in the library and classroom settings.

    • Promotes student voice, choice, creativity, and exploration through library programming, displays, book promotion, clubs, events, and other learning opportunities.

    • Ensures equitable access to library resources, services, learning opportunities, and materials for all students, including multilingual learners, students with disabilities, reluctant readers, and students with a wide range of reading abilities and interests.

    • Uses circulation data, collection data, student feedback, instructional outcomes, and other evidence to evaluate and continuously improve the school library program.

    • Collaborates regularly with the district Library Team to develop consistent library practices, curriculum, collections, programming, and learning opportunities across the district.

    • Works collaboratively with the Digital Learning Team and Information Technology Team when library programming, instruction, digital resources, or student learning needs intersect with technology.

    • Develops partnerships with public libraries, community organizations, authors, educational organizations, and other groups that expand opportunities and resources for students.

    Requirements:

    Massachusetts educator license as a Library Teacher appropriate for the grade level of the position
