Job Description

Chesapeake Public Library (CPL) is seeking an outgoing, detail-oriented, and enthusiastic full-time Library Assistant II with a passion for public service. The ideal candidate will perform a variety of library and clerical tasks at any public service desk - including Adult Services, Circulation, and Youth and Family Services - with a primary focus on the Adult Services Department in a busy area library.

The candidate must have exemplary communication, customer service, and organizational skills. The candidate needs to have the aptitude for working with the public as we deliver new and innovative programming to customers of all ages, demonstrating technology, environmental responsibility, and promoting literacy. This position requires a commitment to delivering outstanding service to a diverse population promoting library services and resources. The candidate must demonstrate the ability to work on a team and independently.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Assisting with, participating in, and leading in-house programs, orientations, and one-on-one tech help sessions, including those involving the Digital Media Studio. The Digital Media Studio features photography and videography equipment such as light box, DSLR camera, video recording cameras and controllers, a teleprompter, post-editing software, an iMac computer, and more. A working knowledge of the aforementioned equipment is preferred.
  • Assisting and participating with in-house programs in the Student Success Center. The Student Success Center entails providing homework help to students in the subject areas of math and reading.
  • Assisting with and participating in programs and activities related to the community gardens and seed library, including basic garden maintenance, promoting sustainable practices, and helping patrons engage with seed-saving and gardening resources. An interest in gardening or environmental education is a plus.
  • Participating in off-site and outreach visits to various community partners to include indoor and outdoor programs.
  • Provides front-line customer service and circulation support, including registering new users, maintaining patron accounts, checking in/out materials and meeting rooms, processing fees and donations, and handling cash and point-of-sale transactions. Also responsible for maintaining accurate records and reports.
  • Assists patrons with technology, resources, and collections, including public computers, tablets, online databases, reader's advisory, and library equipment. Supports collection maintenance through shelving, sorting, inspecting materials, and supervising teen volunteers.
  • Operates and maintains specialized library equipment such as Automated Material Handling (AMH) systems and makerspace tools, while also performing others duties as assigned and offering support across various service points as needed.

The weekly schedule varies and includes day, evening, and weekend hours. May also include after-hours programming.

Required Qualifications

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT:

Requires one year of college in liberal arts or library science or any equivalent combination of education and customer service experience.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:

In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of 6 months related, full-time equivalent library or customer service experience. Six months' public library experience preferred.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:

Requires a valid driver's license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or city-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Requirements:

Experience with automated circulation systems highly desired.

Public library-related experience desired.

Experience working with computers is highly desired.

Comfortable with learning and demonstrating usage of computers, Internet, library catalog, eReaders, eBooks, research databases, e-mail, photocopiers, and fax machines.

Flexibility and a willingness to learn new tools such as laser cutters, Cricuts, and 3D printing. The ability to support activities such as training and assisting customers with sewing and crafting.
