The School District of New Berlin is seeking an innovative and enthusiastic Library Assistant to join the Poplar Creek Elementary School team. Working under the direction of the Building Principal and in close collaboration with the Library Media Specialist, the successful candidate will implement strategies to build and strengthen connections between young students'' information and research needs, their everyday use of technology, and digital resources like introductory coding and information tools.
In this role, you will help bridge the gap between traditional literacy and 21st-century digital skills for our elementary students. You will partner with licensed educators to maintain a productive learning environment and provide individualized and group support that fosters student academic success, foundational computational thinking, and overall classroom engagement. This position offers a consistent schedule of 7 hours per day following a 185-day school year calendar.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Instructional & Academic Support
Provide direct assistance to elementary students during Computer Science lessons, helping them navigate introductory coding platforms (such as Scratch Jr., Blockly, or Code.org) and robotics tools.
Tutor individual students and small groups to reinforce foundational learning objectives, computational thinking, and early research skills under the direction of a licensed educator.
Assist young learners with foundational academic goal-setting, simple time management, keeping track of assignments, and maintaining daily digital and physical organization.
Assist instructional personnel with implementing digital tools and coding software to enhance the presentation of elementary lessons, and collaborate with staff to monitor student progress and needs.
Help students stay focused, troubleshoot coding logic, complete assignments, build confidence, and reinforce positive behavioral and learning habits in alignment with classroom goals.
Provide hands-on student support utilizing a working knowledge of elementary-appropriate technologies, educational apps, and interactive devices.
Library, Technology & Environment Support
Maintain information on library collection needs-including books, STEM materials, and coding resources-to provide input to the librarian and coordinator.
Keep the library and digital learning spaces well-organized, manage the checkout and processing of materials and tech resources, and assist with the daily supervision of elementary students.
Guide students in using both print materials and digital instructional resources, providing enthusiastic support in the school''s learning center.
Facilitate the scheduling and setup of student collaboration areas, media spaces, and introductory coding/makerspace areas.
Troubleshoot basic software application problems, elementary coding platform glitches, and student device issues, researching and implementing quick solutions.
Manage the library''s online catalog under the direction of the librarian.
Assist the lead teacher with elementary classroom management to support a calm, safe, engaging, and inclusive learning environment.
