Job Description

This .75 FTE position works at the Music/Media desk on the ground floor of the Miller Nichols Library and reports to the Head of Music/Media. This position is in charge of the Music/Media area and ground floor during work shifts, provides circulation assistance and basic reference service, independently applies policies and procedures, indirectly supervises student assistants, and performs other Music/Media duties. This position also works with security officers assigned to the building, Circulation Services, and the UMKC Police to maintain a safe, secure environment for library patrons and is responsible for closing the Music/Media Library Thursday-Sunday.

Position Duties:

• Provides friendly, efficient assistance to patrons and resolves problems in the Music/Media unit that cannot be resolved at lower levels (i.e. by student assistants.) Independently applies and interprets policies and procedures at point of need. Refers problems that cannot be resolved at the LIS level to a Music/Media LIS SR or the Head of Music/Media. This will generally be a referral for resolution at a later time due to the position's work schedule.
• Oversees Music/Media desk functions and assists/oversees student assistants in providing services at this desk, communicating effectively with library patrons, supervisor, and other library staff.
• Answers directional and circulation questions.
• Assists patrons with printing, scanning, and basic production software issues in the Music/Media lab, including lifting paper reams, stooping and bending to troubleshoot printer problems, etc.
• Answers basic music, media, and dance reference questions. Recognizes and refers questions that require additional expertise.
• Maintains the safety and security of the Miller Nichols Library ground floor, including the MNL north entrance, during scheduled shifts. Works with security officer assigned to building, Circulation Services, and UMKC Police to maintain safe, secure environment for library patrons. Provides backup support to first floor circulation desk in safety and security issues. Stays current on training and privacy guidelines related to access to all MNL security cameras, consulting them in case of security issues. Reports facility issues during scheduled shift. Secures ground floor at closing.
• Documents and communicates situations and issues that occur during work shifts to Music/Media and other colleagues, in accordance with Libraries and Music/Media policies and procedures, including the Libraries' Safe and Respectful Environment policy.
• Performs detail-oriented project work, following detailed written and oral instructions, completing repetitive work accurately, and differentiating detailed information. Stays current with Microsoft Office software, especially Excel, producing and/or reviewing a variety of library materials, written correspondence, reports, and related materials in both electronic and hard copy form.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
• Professional development and service:
• Participates on appropriate committees and professional development as defined by and with the approval of their Supervisor.
• Maintains sufficient expertise in skills and proficiencies required by the position.

Shift

This position works Thursday-Sunday and is responsible for supervising the Music/Media desk during work hours and closing the Music/Media Library Thursday-Sunday. Hours fluctuate during breaks/intersessions and the eight-week summer session. The position will occasionally cover other shifts in the absence of other employees. Any permanent schedule changes must be approved by the Supervisor. This position's hours are:

• Fall & Spring semesters:

• Thursday, 4:15 p.m. - 12:15 a.m.

• Friday, 2:15 p.m. - 10:15 p.m.

• Saturday, 4:15 p.m. - 10:15 p.m.

• Sunday, 4:15 p.m. - 12:15 a.m.

• Eight-week summer session:

• Sunday: 2:15 p.m. - 10:15 p.m.

• Thursday, 2:15 p.m. - 10:15 p.m.

• Friday, 10:15 a.m. - 6:15 p.m.

• Saturday, 12:15 p.m. - 6:15 p.m.

• Intersessions (4 weeks Dec/Jan, 1 week spring break, 3 weeks May, 3 weeks Aug):

• Tuesday: 11:15 a.m. - 7:15 p.m.

• Wednesday: 11:15 a.m. - 7:15 p.m.

• Thursday, 11:15 a.m. - 7:15 p.m.

• Friday, 12:15 p.m. - 6:15 p.m.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent and at least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

• One to two years' experience in a library setting
• Successful supervisory experience
• Successful customer service experience
• Knowledge of music and the performing arts, including the ability to read music, at a level usually acquired through formal study or education

Anticipated Hiring Range

The anticipated hiring range for this position has been established as $16.56 -$18.00/hourly. In addition, this position is eligible for a $1.00 shift differential for eligible hours. See HR-213 Shift Differential for more information.

Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual's particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements.

Supervisory Authority:

In the absence of other Music/Media staff members, indirectly supervises Music/Media Student Assistants including assigning tasks and training on basic skills. Provides input to the Music/Media Daytime Supervisor regarding student assistant performance during late night and weekend shifts.
