Job Description / Essential Elements: Print

Basic Function: Under the general supervision of the Librarian, the Library Tech will assist students and teachers who come in to use the library: support accessing a wide array of print and digital resources for reading or research. The Library Tech will maintain the library's print, textbook and media collection: process new materials, update digital catalog, repair materials, run circulation desk, manage automated overdue notice system, generate bills and inventory textbooks and library collection. The Library Tech will supervise and direct student TAs in their various duties (circulation, class novel check-out, shelf reading, book processing, etc.) The Library Tech will supervise students visiting the library independently throughout the day, including brunch and lunchtime, and will also train and direct parent volunteers at walk-through registration. The Library Tech will support district tech staff in managing chromebooks including checkout, repair, loaners and also helping students troubleshoot chromebook malfunctions.

Distinguishing Characteristics: The position requires strong organizational and record-keeping skills so that library operations run smoothly.

Manage Library Circulation -Check out/in library materials and textbooks, set-up automated overdue notice system and update throughout the year. Support year-end library material/textbook return, manage accounting for lost material payment, including site remittance of all cash and checks to district office and reimbursement requests for returned materials Maintain accurate records in library receipt book and in Destiny software.

Ordering Materials- Generate purchase orders for books, audiovisual and digital materials and support book selection as requested, maintain inventory of book processing materials, office supplies and order as needed. Track and receive shipments and ensure paperwork is delivered to district office in timely manner for payment, follow-up with vendors on missing items.

Book Processing and Mending - Catalog all library and textbook materials in Destiny software, process materials for accurate shelving and checkout with covers, labels. Repair damaged library bookand textbooks as needed.

Marketing: Update new book blog as titles arrive; search and select professional reviews, book jacket art and add to blog. Showcase new titles on library display shelves. Create new library displays by subject or genre and maintain inviting library space with posters and helpful signage.

Managing English class novel checkout - Check out (and in) class sets of required English novels in a timely manner to meet the needs of English teachers throughout the year. Maintain record/inventory of English class checkout to support teachers.

Inventory-Conduct inventory of library and textbook materials as requested by librarian.

Special Programs- 1:1 Connected Learning: Working with district technology staff, support the distribution and collection of chromebooks, assist with repair process and maintain accurate records in Destiny.

Support school-wide activities as requested by librarian.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience: Any combination of training, experience, and/or education equivalent to five years of increasingly responsible office experience. Experience and enjoyment working with adolescents in a school setting which includes the ability to consistently apply rules while adjusting flexibly to the constantly changing needs of a high school library.

Skills: Proficient in the use of word processing and/or other computer software used by the library, school site, and District; operate a variety of office machines and equipment including computers, photocopy machines, and calculators.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: Modern office practices, procedures, and equipment. Operation of a computer system, computer software, and data entry techniques. Library analog and digital systems: dewey decimal system, OPAC (Follett Destiny), book processing and mending, QSS P.O. generation program, database search strategies, experience using digital tools, eBooks, audiobook apps, and Google applications (GAFE). Knowledge of tech tools to support students and teachers.

Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary.

Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, respect, and courtesy. Telephone systems, techniques, and etiquette. Operations, procedures, specific rules and precedents of the school site and District.

Ability to:

Meet District standards of professional attitude as outlined in Board Policy 4219.21 Code of Ethics for Classified Personnel.

Communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Use tact and good judgment in working in school library environment. Maintain complex records and prepare reports; maintain the integrity of confidential and sensitive information.

Determine appropriate action within clearly defined guidelines. Work independently with little direction.

Meet schedules and time deadlines. Compose correspondence and written materials independently. Perform clerical and administrative duties in support of library activities. Learn new technologies as they become necessary in the job responsibilities.

Working Conditions:

Environment: PHS/PMS Library; constant interruptions.

Physical Abilities: Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person and on the telephone; vision adequate to read, prepare and proofread documents; sitting and standing for extended periods of time; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and other office equipment; kneeling, bending at the waist and reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally to retrieve and store books; lifting light objects.
