City of Virginia Beach has a great opportunity to join Virginia Beach Public Library as a part time (20 hrs./per week) Library Service Specialist I: G15 Pay Range $16.92 hourly or Library Services Specialist II: G17-Pay Range $18.65 hourly at various locations, depending on qualifications.

Library Services Specialist I - part time - duties include but are not limited to:

• Shelve library materials accurately in alpha-numeric order to ensure immediate access by staff and customers.
• Maintain library materials in proper order and adjust to changes in the collection by shifting materials to improve access to them.
• Assist customers with basic questions to provide quality customer service and refer more complicated questions to appropriate staff members as needed
• Perform the tasks necessary to prepare the agency for opening and closing.
• Regularly check the proper order of library materials on shelves
• Respond effectively to customers’ requests for assistance
• Ability to deal with stressful situations with tact and diplomacy
• Flexibility, responsiveness, and good communication skills
• Ability to learn and use the computerized circulation system
• Physical ability to lift, stoop, and stretch to transfer books and materials weighing 1 - 15 lbs. each from 4 to 7.5 hours per day and to be on your feet for long periods of time.  Physical ability to push/pull fully loaded, wheeled library book carts.
• May perform circulation functions, including account maintenance, issuing library cards, cash handling, checking library materials in and out, managing holds and interlibrary loan requests.

Library Services Specialist II - part time (20 hrs. per week) duties include but are not limited to:

• Applying a broad knowledge of customer service, library operations, services, and materials.
• Providing information, reference assistance, and circulation services to library customers and promoting the library’s collection and services through tours and other activities.
• Answering customer inquiries in person, virtually, and via the telephone.
• Assisting with making collection recommendations and performs collection maintenance using reports.
• Performing circulation functions, including account maintenance, issuing library cards, handling cash, checking library materials in and out, managing holds and interlibrary loan requests, and processing incomplete or damaged items.
• Interpreting, explaining, and applying library policies and procedures to respond to customer concerns.
• Facilitating library customers’ requests for information.
• Conduct reference interviews with customers to clarify information needs.
• Developing appropriate search strategies and identifying appropriate resources to respond to customers’ requests.
• Performing information searches using search engines, online databases, the library catalog, and print resources.
• Assisting and instructing customers in the use of library technology, personal mobile devices and laptops, library digital services, applications, software, and emails.
• Shelving library materials accurately and in a timely manner.
• Planning and preparing exhibits and displays, leading tours, and participating in outreach that increases community awareness of library services and resources. Assisting with planning and presenting library programs.
• Collecting and inputting data that will measure the impact of library services.
• Participating in departmental strategic teams to develop system policies and procedures.
• May supervise volunteers, serving as a Volunteer Resource Manager
• Performing other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on the current workloads and department needs.

This position may be filled as either a part-time Library Services Specialist I or Library Services Specialist II depending on the qualifications of the selected applicant. As part of a collaborative library system, staff may occasionally have opportunities or be reassigned to support service needs at other locations within the system. We are hiring for multiple positions at various locations.

Minimum Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications: Must be at least 15 years of age and eligible for appropriate working permit. Special Requirements: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Must be able to work rotating shifts (days/evenings) including weekends and holidays, be available to work overtime, and work at various library locations as necessary to meet operational needs.
