The Hillsboro Public Library is seeking a Library Supervisor to oversee our library programs & events in our dynamic and growing community. Our libraries are much more than just books; we are dedicated to offering programs and services that reflect and serve the diverse needs of our residents. This unique role will lead our Events and Programming Team, which focuses on delivering responsive events and programs aligned with our "For Everyone/Para Todos" mission.

Essential duties

  • Supervise 3 - 5 full and part-time direct reports: prioritizing and assigning work; conducting performance evaluations; ensuring staff is trained; ensuring that employees follow policies and procedures
  • Monitoring program budgets, program resources & staffing
  • Receives customer inquiries and requests; addresses and provides responses to inquire program offerings
  • Fosters a culture of accountability, professional growth, and continuous improvement through effective performance management and employee development.
  • Work with the event planning team to support dynamic programming and foster a positive work environment aligned with the City and Library's mission and values.
  • Supports daily library building operations, including opening and closing procedures, staff scheduling, addressing customer service issues, and serving as Person in Charge when needed.

Current and Upcoming Projects

  • Supporting Fall programming operations and advance scheduling of upcoming programs to help staff maintain organized and successful community engagement efforts.
  • Supporting the Librarys new Strategic Plan and accompanying initiatives
  • Supporting City Council priorities, Hillsboro's 2035 Community Plan, and working within the City's community engagement framework to develop and improve upon library services to all residents.
  • Working with the Events and Programming Team, City of Hillsboro departments, and the community to develop responsive and engaging programming and services for all ages. Current initiatives include Early Literacy, Student Success, Cultural Engagement, Inclusive Early Literacy and Workforce Development.
  • Contributing to the Library's marketing and communications work, collaborating with the Library's Public Information Officer and City's Communications Department to expand the reach of our services.

Experience

As the Library Supervisor, you will work closely with the Library Manager - Events and Programming in addition to our collaborative leadership and supervisory team to ensure a smooth continuity of operations and ensure that issues are proactively identified and resolved equitably and effectively. We are fortunate to have a diverse team that is full of energy, brings new ideas, and is engaged in the work we do. We need someone who is passionate about building relationships and delivering inclusive library services to our diverse community while embracing and promoting a positive work environment that celebrates change and is interested in elevating the library's visibility.

We are especially interested in identifying gaps in who we are currently serving and ensuring our programming reaches and reflects the full diversity of our community. You will work with your team to broaden our impact through inclusive and engaging library services. Using data and community information, you will help guide the planning, coordination, and evaluation of programs and events. Your dedicated team will consist of Librarians, Library Support Specialists, and will include close collaboration with the Volunteer Engagement Coordinator, Event Coordinator, Outreach Supervisor & Outreach Coordinator.

The ideal candidate is flexible, strategic, and collaborative, someone who brings strong problem-solving, innovation, organization, and delegation skills to the table. Should have experience in event planning, partnership development, and a willingness to try new ideas, celebrate successes, and learn from challenges. Acceptable Experience and Training

Bachelor's degree in Library Science, Recreation Management, Education, Arts & Humanities, and Social Sciences, Social Work, or a closely related field; and four years of related experience, including one year of supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience, such as event planning or community programs development, sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

LICENSE(S) / CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Valid, current Driver's License and safe driving record - required at time of hire*

  • State Notarial Certification - not required at time of hire; may be obtained within six months of hire*

  • First aid, CPR, and mediation certification - preferred but not required*

Additional Information

This is an exempt position and requires evening and weekend work.

The schedule for this position is Tuesday through Saturday with at least one evening shift per week required. to ensure we are providing excellent service across our 64-weekly open hours at each library location. Your hours may fluctuate for events, training, or operational need.

Proposed schedule for this position:

  • Tuesday 9 am to 6 pm
  • Wednesday 9 am to 6 pm
  • Thursday 11:15 am to 8:15 pm
  • Friday 9:15 am to 6:15 pm
  • Saturday 9:15 am to 6:15 pm

Bilingual Incentive Pay Available

Employees who can demonstrate the ability to speak Spanish, ASL, or any other language spoken by over 10% of the City residents as documented by the most recent U.S. Census, will receive a monthly 3% premium pay. The incentive is only paid on hours in paid status. Proficiency will be determined by a City-administered test.
