Description

The Library Technician I helps patrons in the use of library catalogs and databases to locate books and other materials; answers questions that require only brief consultation; and assists in the use of library technology and resources. The Library Technician I also sorts and shelves books; checks materials in and out of the circulation process; and collects fine payments. Additional examples of work performed may take precedence, depending on need. This is a skilled, non-exempt position.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Performs basic tasks using the library's circulation software: reserves, circulates, renews, and checks in books and other materials; collects fine payments; enters and updates patrons records on computers.
  • Responds to routine questions or concerns in person, by telephone, and by email; and provides information regarding library services, procedures, fees, or other issues.
  • Assists patrons in the use and operation of computers, library equipment, databases, and materials.
  • Sorts books, publications, and other items according to procedure and returns them to shelves, or other designated storage areas.
  • Conducts reference searches, using printed materials and online databases.
  • Provides readers' advisory services to patrons through individual recommendations or book displays.
  • Other duties as assigned.

ADDITIONAL EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

  • Support the Children's and Teen Program Coordinators with the implementation of programs for all age groups, including setup and takedown of tables and chairs, as well as general cleanup.
  • Assist in the planning and preparation of the library's annual Summer Reading Program.
  • Participate in community outreach efforts and represent the library at local events.
  • Prepares official documents or correspondence related to policy violations and other issues.
  • Records and delivers information to supervisors and officials, such as library statistics.
  • Processes library materials to prepare them for inclusion in library collections.
  • Repairs or removes damaged material.
  • Receives and accounts for cash from fees and copier charges.
  • Attends meetings, trainings, and workshops.

Performs light custodial duties to maintain a clean and orderly environment

Typical Qualifications

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of computers and common software.
  • Ability to learn and independently use new technology and software.
  • Knowledge of library services and collections, including digital resources.
  • Ability to perform detailed and technical support work.
  • Ability to explain procedures and policies.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and effectively in both verbal and written forms with diverse populations.
  • Ability to work some evening and weekend shifts.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Some college preferred.
  • 1+ years public library experience strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and the Internet
  • Must be able to learn new computer applications, especially as related to library software.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The employee must have the ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time daily; mobility and strength to bend, stoop, lift and carry books for a short distance; speech and hearing to communicate in person and by telephone; manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; vision to read handwritten and printed materials and a computer screen; and good memory and recall. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Work is performed indoors in a comfortable, climate-controlled office environment. Moderate noise level.
