POSITION: Library Technical Assistant - Technical Services
Description of Duties:
Responsible for the support of library services and programs through collection development, management, cataloging, and classification of resources. This position ensures that all collections are acquisitioned, accurately described, organized, preserved, and accessible to users. The LTA-TS plays a key role in records management, maintaining metadata, applying cataloging and classification standards (MARC, RDA, LCC), preparing materials for circulation, and supporting resource sharing. Library Systems & Technology - Operate integrated library system (ILS) modules for acquisitions, cataloging, and circulation; utilize bibliographic utilities; and update metadata to ensure accurate resource management. Collection Development & Management - Assist in selection, deselection, and retention processes across formats; document collection changes; and recommend replacements for outdated or damaged materials. Acquisitions & Resource Preparation - Process purchase requests, invoices, and order tracking; manage business records of a confidential nature; resolve vendor discrepancies; and prepare materials for circulation through labeling, stamping, and processing. Metadata & Catalog Records Management - Apply MARC, RDA, and related standards to create, review, and edit catalog records; enhance metadata for various formats; and identify and correct cataloging errors. Classification & Organization - Assign and verify classification numbers using standard schemes such as Library of Congress; ensure shelf order accuracy; and adjust classification for local needs. Authority Control & Access Points - Maintain consistent access points by linking catalog records to authority files; identify unauthorized or conflicting headings; and ensure discoverability through authority control. Preservation & Resource Care - Identify items requiring repair; perform routing preservation measures such as mending and protective covering; and follow established environmental and handling procedures. Resource Sharing & Collaborative Practices - Process interlibrary loan (ILL) requests, adhere to resource-sharing agreements, and communicate with partner libraries to expand user access beyond local holdings. Evaluation & Quality Assurance - Generate reports and analyze collection usage data; identify cataloging gaps or errors; and recommend improvements for accuracy and effectiveness. Policy & Compliance - Apply institutional policies, copyright, and licensing regulations; interpret retention and weeding guidelines; and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal standards. User-Centered Access - Support internal users in navigating collections, explaining cataloging and classification systems, and recommending enhancements to improve discovery and resource access. Regular attendance is an essential function of this position.
Minimum Qualifications:
Associate degree in Library Technical Assistance or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience working with integrated library systems (ILS), acquisitions, cataloging, or related technical services functions. Experience with general office administrative support tools and equipment. Knowledge of cataloging standards (MARC, RDA) and classification schemes (Dewey Decimal, Library of Congress). Proficiency in library systems, bibliographic utilities, and online tools. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment. Effective communication and problem-solving skills. Ability to lift, carry, shelve, and shift library materials up to 25 pounds. Ability to push and pull loaded book trucks. Ability to reach above shoulder. Extended periods of sitting, standing, or computer use. Manual dexterity for handling and processing library materials. Visual acuity for reading catalog records, metadata, and reports.
Desired Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in library science or studies, knowledge or information management, or related discipline. Two (2) years work experience in a technical services area with an integrated library system (ILS) or library management services platform. Familiarity with interlibrary loan systems and vendor relations. Training or continuing education aligned with library support staff (LSS) or library technical assistant (LTA) degree course work.
