    Job Description

    Library Technician II- Denton

    Performs routine work providing customer support to library patrons.

    Distinguishing Features of the Class

               

    An employee in this class is responsible for providing customer support in circulation and reference services.  Work generally requires the employee to check materials in and out at the circulation desk and assist patrons with reference methods and resources.  Work is performed under regular supervision of the Library Manager.

    Illustrative Examples of Work

    • Works at the circulation desk checking materials in and out; answers telephones; and provides assistance to patrons
    • Notifies patrons of overdue books and fines; collects fees and fines
    • Registers patrons for new or replacement cards
    • Maintains the inventory of patron requested items and may request materials for patrons
    • Promotes new materials and determines when they rotate off the new shelves
    • Answers patrons’ questions regarding reference material
    • Registers patrons for computer usage and assists with computer applications
    • Assists patrons in finding research materials
    • Counts the library’s nightly deposits
    • Shelves books and maintains shelves for accuracy and neatness
    • Reviews and selects new materials for the teen area
    • Maintains current knowledge of young adult books and authors as well as trends in library services
    • Maintains an inviting teen area with current displays
    • Plans, schedules, and performs programming for teen programming (7th-12th grade)
    • Plans, schedules and performs Summer Reading programming for all teens (7th – 12th grade)
    • Plans, schedules and facilitates TAB (Teen Advisory Board) meetings and events including yearly parades
    • Collaborates with local middle/high school(s) to perform outreach services including book check out and programming
    • Adheres to the department’s safety rules and regulations
    • May open and/or close the library
    • May process donated and/or new materials
    • May designate items for and coordinate book-sales; recruits and coordinates volunteers 
    • May submit estimates and orders for supplies as well as maintain supply inventory
    • May perform light clerical duties
    • Performs other related duties as required
    • Helps to plan, market and implement library programming
    • Assists with library’s Internet presence, especially through social media outlets

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • Must have strong computer and research skills
    • Some knowledge of library operations, techniques, systems, tools and policies and procedures
    • Knowledge of library collection, including books and authors
    • Knowledge of age appropriate materials
    • Some knowledge of resources available for genealogical research
    • Some knowledge of fines and collection process
    • Ability to operate computers, automated systems and a variety of equipment.
    • Ability to interpret library rules, procedures and policies
    • Ability to use library reference materials and develop resourceful search strategies using a variety of media
    • Ability to provide guidance and direction to the general public and instruct them in locating information to meet their needs
    • Ability to provide guidance to volunteers in basic library functions.
    • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
    • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, maintaining positive relationships with colleagues and community partners. Demonstrate willingness to support coworkers, contribute ideas, and adapt flexibly to various situations
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with patrons from a diverse population of people, vendors, other libraries, and the general public

    Physical Requirements

    • Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational support functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.
    • Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
    • Must possess close visual acuity.

    Education and Experience

    Graduation with a two-year degree or two years of college and some experience working in a library providing support and assistance to patrons or related experience
