Department Summary:

The University of Michigan (U-M) University Health & Counseling (UHC) a unit of Student Life (SL), is an AAAHC accredited outpatient multispecialty health clinic that serves a large and diverse student body of more than 45,000 students, as well as U-M faculty and staff. UHC provides direct patient care through its primary care and specialty clinics, and contributes to public health, epidemiological surveillance, health education and promotion on campus. UHC reports administratively to the AVP of Student Life for Health and Wellness, uses the same instance of Epic (Michart) as Michigan Medicine, and closely collaborates with Michigan Medicine public health agencies.

UHC provides clinical services throughout its primary care and specialty clinics, as well as health and wellness education and promotion. Specialty clinics include Allergy, Dermatology, Eating and Body Image Concerns, Eye Care, Gynecology & Sexual Health, Nutrition, Physical Therapy, Psychiatry, Sleep, Social Work, Sports Medicine and Travel Health. Patient care is additionally supported through an on-site CLIA high complexity laboratory, pharmacy, and radiology suite. Annually UHC completes >90,000 clinician visits, >4900 radiologic studies, >35,000 laboratory tests, and fills >25,000 prescriptions.

Position Summary:

Provide patient intake and education for an average of 14-22 patients per day. Perform allergy and immunotherapy injections in accordance with established protocols, monitor patients for potential reactions, and provide appropriate follow-up and education regarding treatment plans and safety precautions.

Provide in-basket clinical support within the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) scope of practice, including reviewing and responding to patient communications, assisting with care coordination, communicating pertinent information to the healthcare team, and supporting timely follow-up and resolution of patient needs

Responsibilities*

Patient Care (90%)

• Escort patients to exam rooms and obtain vital signs according to unit guidelines.
• Assesses allergies, current medications and reconciles the chart accordingly.
• Provide nursing care, administration of medications, including titration of multiple medications.
• Observe patient's situation, report, and record significant changes.
• Provide patient education according to established teaching plans.
• Provide routine patient preparation instructions.
• Provide care in an anaphylaxis situation.
• Telephone triage and management according to protocol.
• Initiate appropriate measures in emergency situations.
• Maintain written records according to unit guidelines.
• Document patient care accurately and completely

Administrative (10%)

• Participate in quality improvement activities related to medication management, patient safety, and clinical workflows.
• Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of licensure, training, and competency.
• Participation in monthly workload meetings
• Participation in quality improvement activities
• Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications*

• Graduate of an accredited practical nursing program
• Current licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the State of Michigan.
• Two (2) years of experience in an Licensed Practical Nurse role

Desired Qualifications*

• Experience administering injections
• Experience working with an electronic health record, preferably Epic

Onsite 5 days a week

Hours: 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday 8am-430 pm.

Frequent periods of stationary positions while administering injections

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.
