Primary Purpose:

The licensed vocational nurse serves under the immediate guidance and supervision of a registered professional nurse. The LVN assists the school nurse with clerical, first aid, and health care tasks; therefore, providing health services to a greater number of school age children in the assigned school(s). The LVN maintains a nursing license through mandatory continuing education.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

Texas LVN license issues by the Board of Vocational Nurse Examiners

High school diploma or GED equivalent

Current CPR certification

Current Texas Department of Health certification for vision, hearing, and spinal screening

First Aid Certification

Valid Texas drivers' license

Special Knowledge/Skills

Nursing skills

Strong organization, communication, and interpersonal skills

Filing and documentation skills

Clerical /computer experience desired

Experience:

Two years experience in community health, pediatric nursing, or office nursing that includes contact with school-age children.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support board and administrative policies and decisions
  • Maintain professional work environment through a positive attitude, punctuality, regular attendance, phone etiquette, and personal appearance

General:

  • Maintain an efficient, safe, and healthful clinic environment on each campus
  • Provide basic first aid and emergency care according to the District policies and procedures
  • Dispense medication and perform treatments with documentation upon written request of the parent or legal guardian and doctor according to District policies and procedures
  • Assist with communicable disease prevention and control programs including monitoring current State mandated immunizations
  • Perform selected health screening activities
  • Communicate with the supervising registered nurse the signs and symptoms of disease for making necessary appropriate referral for intervention
  • Refer to supervising nurse those situations necessitating professional nursing assessment/intervention
  • Record selected student health information and keep accurate data for monthly report.
  • Share appropriate health information with the registered nurse and maintain confidentiality
  • Inform registered nurse of health counseling and health education requests or needs
  • Assist families in accessing community health care resources
  • Serve as a resource person to students and staff
  • Assist in maintaining adequate clinic supplies
  • Perform additional related tasks and duties as requested, taught, and supervised by the registered nurse

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Health Services/designee:

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITITES: None

WORKING CONDITIONS:

TOOLS & EQUIPMENT: thermometer, sphygmomanometer, stethoscope, otoscope, audiometer, vision screening equipment, glucometer, peak flow meter, nebulizer, wheel chairs, basic clinic equipment, personal computer and copier

MENTAL DEMANDS: working with medical emergency situations, work with multiple tasks at the same time, prioritize work to meet deadline, work with frequent interruptions, maintain confidentiality, maintain emotional control under stress

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: lift, carry, and position student with and without assistance using good body mechanics and good judgment

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: high-risk exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other communicable diseases

administer CPR, if necessary, until help arrives

Wage/Hour Status: Non-Exempt

Pay Grade: Clerical Paraprofessional - 7
