LICENSED VOCATIONAL NURSE

RANGE 36

The Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) will provide specialized physical health care services (SPHCS) for or assist with medically complex special education and general education students. The LVN is responsible for planning, assessing and administering student health care safely within the LVN Practice Act under the direction of the credentialed school nurse and under physician's orders. This job class assists assigned school nurse and other certificated staff to meet the specialized physical health care needs of designated students. Employees in this classification receive direct and indirect supervision from the school nurse regarding health-related training. General supervision within a framework of policies and procedures is provided.

This position description is intended to describe the general nature and level of work to be performed by an employee assigned to this position. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/DUTIE

  • Make daily rounds to identify health issues
  • Administer medications and treatments to student(s) according to physician orders and under the direction of credentialed school nurse; fill medication containers and distribute to appropriate classrooms
  • Administer gastrostomy tube feedings and oral feedings to designated students requiring strict adherence to clearly defined procedures and instructions
  • Perform tracheostomy suctioning and other specialized procedures in accordance with medical orders/procedures, clearly defined instructions, and established guidelines
  • Provide personal care and hygiene
  • Document appropriate daily assessment, SPHCS procedures, medications, changes regarding student's condition, and responses to procedures on appropriate logs
  • Report unusual situations and ongoing changes in the student's condition and/or needs to the credentialed school nurse/case manager, parent, and teacher
  • Communicate clearly and effectively verbally and in writing
  • Contact the physician as needed, under the direction of the credentialed school nurse
  • Provide a safe and sanitary environment for the student; follow Universal Precautions at all times
  • Respond to student medical emergencies, and administer appropriate first aid
  • Assist in physically positioning, transferring, and/or lifting students as required; lift, turn, and move students from place to place
  • Attend staff in-services and seek appropriate educational opportunities
  • Assist in the supervision and monitoring of students to maintain effective learning and/or safe play/recreational environments; note behavioral and other problems observed; reinforce designated discipline management program as appropriate
  • Perform kneeling, stooping, standing, and lifting activities in the performance of required daily activities
  • Assess patient equipment needs and utilize existing equipment correctly and safely
  • Perform related duties similar to the above in scope and impact as required

QUALIFICATIONS

  • OCDE policies and procedures relating to health care

License/Certificate Requirement:

  • Licensed Vocational Nurse Certificate
  • Valid California Driver's License
  • Valid CPR Certificate
  • Valid First Aid Certificate
  • Completion of high school or General Education Diploma (GED)
