General Description

This position provides complex (senior-level) vocational nursing care. Work involves providing early recognition and immediate response to medical treatment and general welfare of patients; May supervise the work of others; Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Examples of Work Performed

Ensures that care is delivered to each patient in accordance with the nurse Practice Act of the State of Texas.

Administers medication orally, rectally, internally, or by injection; within the scope of safe nursing practice.

Monitors patients for treatments and procedures.

Monitors patients vital signs: blood pressure, temperature, pulse, oxygen saturation, and respirations.

Collects specimens for laboratory examination.

Conducts appropriate screening tests.

Adheres to policies, procedures, and protocols.

Responds in a timely manner to meet the needs of the patients.

Implements Physicians orders in a safe and accurate manner.

Applies principles and practices to assess, prevent, and control disease.

Maintains records pertaining to medication, deaths, illnesses, and the transfer of patients.

Maintains detailed and accurate records of nursing actions.

Collaborates with other professional disciplines to ensure effective patient care delivery and the achievement of desired patient outcomes.

Oversees the preparation and maintenance of records and reports.

Reviews and assesses patient records.

Develops quality assurance programs.

Develops in-service training and educational programs.

Participates in conducting therapeutic programs.

Able to perform the techniques of cardiopulmonary resuscitation accurately and effectively.

Provides and receives reports in a status of patients at the change of shifts.

Maintains a safe and clean environment for patients and co-workers.

Adapts to the needs of the unit by demonstrating flexibility/adaptability.

May supervise the work of others.

Provides direction to non-licensed nursing staff in the delivery of patient care.

Performs related work as assigned.

Informs the charge nurse of any anticipated or actual problems.

Education and Experience

Must be a Licensed Vocational Nurse.

Three (3) years of experience in nursing work.

Certificates, Licenses and Registration:

Must be licensed as a Licensed Vocational Nurse by the State of Texas or in a party state that recognizes reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact.

Maintains current with license renewal every 2 years and required continued education hours.

Current Basic Life Support (CPR) certification.

Must have a current valid Texas motor vehicle operator's license.

Must be able to be insured by the County's insurance carrier.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of nursing procedures and techniques.

Ability to provide patient medical care, to prepare and maintain records, and to supervise the work of others.
