GovCIO is currently hiring for a LiDAR Engineer/Scientist 1 to design, develop, and integrate LiDAR-based sensing solutions for advanced perception systems. This role involves working across hardware, firmware, and software to deliver high-accuracy structural mapping and object detection capabilities. The ideal candidate has strong experience with LiDAR sensors, point cloud processing, and real-time perception and the ability to support engineering functions on the Navy’s Fleet Submarine Very Low and Low-Frequency Broadcast Engineering Support team. This position will be in Charleston, SC and will be an on-site position that typically requires 40% CONUS/OCONUS travel.
Responsibilities:
Develop and optimize LiDAR sensor configurations for vehicle, robotics, or mapping applications
Implement algorithms for point cloud filtering, segmentation, object detection, and classification.
Evaluate LiDAR hardware performance and recommend sensor selections and calibration strategies.
Integrate LiDAR data pipelines into existing perception or Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) systems.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams including hardware engineers, software developers, and product managers.
Conduct field tests, analyze results, and improve system performance in real-world conditions.
Create documentation, test plans, and reports for both internal use and regulatory compliance.
Understand how LiDAR can be integrated into Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), which incorporated tools like CST, and Solidworks can help visualize what is actually taking place at each site.
Perform electronics troubleshooting to the component level; read schematics/wiring diagrams; perform cable build/repair, connectorization, and rework/soldering as needed to restore system operation.
Qualifications:
Required Skills and Experience
High School degree with 3-6 yrs experience
Clearance Level: SECRET
BS degree in Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Robotics or Physics or related field.
3+ years of hands-on experience working with LiDAR sensors or 3D perception systems.
Strong Proficiency with point cloud processing libraries (e.g., PCL, Open3D)
Experience in C++, Python, or ROS.
Familiarity with calibration, sensor fusion, and real-time systems.
Solid understanding of geometric algorithms and 3D data structures.
