The Life Safety Sergeant reports to the Director of Life Safety Services and serves as both a working patrol officer and the departments primary shift supervisor. The Sergeant serves as Officer in Charge (OIC) in the Directors absence, exercising full departmental authority. The Sergeant also leads field training, maintains proficiency across all departmental technology platforms, and holds Campus Security Authority (CSA) designation under the Clery Act.

The posted wage represents CSB and SJUs good faith estimate of likely compensation at the time of posting. Actual pay will be dependent upon several factors, including the candidates experience, qualifications, and skills, and may fall outside of the range indicated.

Responsibilities

Command and Supervision

  • Serve as Officer in Charge (OIC) in the Directors absence: exercise full departmental command authority, serve as the primary Life Safety liaison to the Campus Action and Response Team (CART), and brief the Director on all significant decisions and incidents
  • Lead shift operations including pre-shift briefings, officer assignments, incident command, and real-time performance coaching
  • Review and approve all incident reports, Daily Crime Log entries, and shift documentation before submission
  • Manage scheduling, leave requests, overtime, and shift coverage in coordination with the Director
  • Maintain the evidence room including chain of custody, inventory, and disposition records
  • Participate in hiring, onboarding, and performance evaluation of officers and student officers

Patrol and Field Operations

  • Conduct active patrol of campus buildings, grounds, roadways, and parking areas on foot, bicycle, or vehicle throughout the assigned shift
  • Respond to all calls for service: fire alarms, medical emergencies, criminal complaints, security breaches, traffic incidents, and requests for assistance
  • Conduct criminal and policy investigations; prepare complete, accurate reports and forward to appropriate authorities
  • Enforce traffic and parking regulations; provide traffic and crowd control, and coordinate security and parking for campus events and major activities.
  • Respond to incidents involving the Abbey, Preparatory School, HMML, and Liturgical Press per applicable protocol.

Technology Systems

  • Lenel OnGuard - Monitor access control events, respond to alarms, and document anomalies during shift
  • Omnigo - Complete and approve all incident reports, activity logs, and crime log entries; ensure officer compliance with documentation standards
  • Motorola BWC and Radio - Activate BWC per policy on all appropriate contacts; ensure officer compliance; retrieve footage as directed; maintain radio discipline and equipment readiness
  • VisionWorks CCTV - Access footage in support of active investigations; report camera outages and system issues.

Field Training

  • Serve as a qualified Field Training Officer (FTO) or coordinate FTO assignments for new hires through all training phases
  • Maintain FTO documentation including Daily Observation Reports, evaluations, and final sign-off records
  • Develop and deliver ongoing staff training covering patrol procedures, emergency response, de-escalation, ICS, ALERRT, BWC, Omnigo, Clery CSA obligations, and fire safety

Clery Act - Campus Security Authority

  • Ensure accurate, timely Daily Crime Log entries for all Clery-reportable incidents occurring during assigned shift
  • Issue or support Timely Warning Notices and Emergency Notifications as directed or while serving as OIC
  • Complete annual CSA training; support the Annual Security and Fire Safety Report process through complete shift documentation

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor's degree in criminal justice, public safety, or a related field preferred
  • Three or more years of experience in campus security, law enforcement, or emergency services, with prior shift leadership or supervisory experience
  • Current CPR/AED certification; EMR or EMT-Basic certification required within six months of hire
  • Possess a valid Minnesota Class D drivers license
  • Successful completion of a comprehensive criminal background check, drug testing and phycological evaluation consistent with Minnesota law and institutional policy.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a wide range of situations with calmness and authority, maintaining composure and control in both high-stress and routine scenarios.
  • Proficiency with records management or incident reporting platforms; ability to learn Lenel, Omnigo, Motorola BWC, and VisionWorks
  • Willingness and ability to work the primary shift (4:00 PM - 2:00 AM), rotating weekends, and available for emergency call back as essential staff.
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Basic computer proficiency.

Physical requirements:

  • Demonstrate good overall health, with the ability to perform physical activities such as walking, running, and standing for extended periods.
  • Occasionally required to lift or move items up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in varying temperatures and weather conditions.

Travel requirements:

  • Occasional travel between the campuses of the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University.

HEALTH INSURANCE

Employees are eligible for coverage in the health insurance plan on the first of the month following date of hire. If you elect medical coverage for yourself, you may also choose to cover your eligible dependents. The employee and CSB/SJU share in the cost of this benefit.

DENTAL INSURANCE

Employees are eligible for coverage in the dental insurance plan on the first of the month following date of hire. If you elect dental coverage for yourself, you may also choose to cover your eligible dependents. The employee and CSB/SJU share in the cost of this benefit.

LIFE INSURANCE

CSB/SJU provides a Basic Life and Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) policy to employees. This insurance is effective on the first of the month following date of hire. The amount of term insurance provided is based on your annual salary.

You may also purchase additional life insurance in increments of one, two, three, or four times your annual salary. There is also a dependent life insurance package available.

LONG-TERM DISABILITY

After one year of benefit eligible employment, CSB/SJU provides disability coverage in the event of an illness or injury that prevents you from working.

VACATION

Paid vacation is accrued based upon FTE and the number of years employed. Vacation is cumulative from year to year to a maximum of 240 hours.

These plans allow employees to set aside part of their salary on a pre-tax basis to pay for IRS approved expenses.

VISION PLAN

This voluntary plan offers affordable vision coverage for routine eye exams, eyeglass lenses and frames, and contact lenses. Discounts on hearing exams and hearing aids are also included.

TUITION REMISSION

Tuition remission is an educational benefit provided by CSB/SJU. A full time employee and spouse (if applicable) are eligible for tuition free educational benefits the first full semester after six months of employment. Full time employees may enroll for one undergraduate course per term, which includes summer; up to a maximum of 2 courses per year.

There is also a tuition remission program for dependent children of full time employees. This program provides a financial resource to a son or daughter for meeting the tuition costs of undergraduate education. Eligibility begins the fall or spring semester following 2 years (24 months) of continuous full-time employment.There are also two consortia programs in which CSB/SJU participate where employees children may apply for scholarships to attend other colleges/universities.

Tuition assistance is also available at Saint Johns Preparatory School for the dependents of full-time employees.

PARENTAL LEAVE

A paid leave (up to 15 days) will be granted to eligible employees upon the birth or adoption of a child, pro-rated based on FTE. New employees are eligible for this benefit after twelve months of employment.

SICK LEAVE

Full-time employees earn up to 9 days of sick leave per year, pro-rated based on FTE.

Sick leave is cumulative from year to year up to a maximum of 720 hours (90 days). Employees may also use accumulated personal sick leave to care for ill family members.

EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a free counseling resource available to

all employees and immediate family members.

RETIREMENT

Defined Contribution Plan

CSB/SJU provides a retirement program for all qualified full time employees. The program is administered by Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association (TIAA).

Enrollment in the retirement plan will be effective the first day of the month following the date of hire unless the employee elects to opt-out.
