The Department of Life Sciences (Division of Health and Sciences) is seeking enthusiastic and dedicated adjunct instructors to teach various life science courses, including lecture and lab instruction. Classes are offered in a variety of formats, including face-to-face, fully online, and hybrid modes of instruction. Weekday, weekend and evening teaching opportunities are available. Join our team of dedicated instructors to inspire and educate the next generation of scientists and to instill fundamental scientific competence in students across the college. Enjoy small class sizes, supportive coordinators, well-equipped classrooms, and top-of-the-line lab facilities and equipment. The Department of Life Sciences is looking for adjunct faculty to teach in these subjects:

\u25cf Biology (for majors and non-majors)

\u25cf Microbiology

\u25cf Anatomy and Physiology

\u25cf Environmental Sciences

\u25cf Genetics

\u25cf Cell Biology

\u25cf Botany

Note that applications are reviewed periodically by department chairs and course coordinators on an as-needed basis to staff courses in fall, winter, spring, and summer terms. Approximately 10-30 new adjuncts are hired every year. Your application enters you into an adjunct pool that is monitored during specific times of year, not continuously.

Essential Role Responsibilities

Candidates should be prepared to engage modern learners through effective and rigorous instruction that utilizes appropriate technology and employs teaching strategies that accommodate diverse learning styles. Adjunct faculty are expected to:

\u25cf Plan, organize, and teach curriculum content in alignment with course objectives.

\u25cf Use applicable technology and pedagogical principles, teach course content via an appropriate delivery format (may include face-to-face, hybrid, online, and remote instruction).

\u25cf Complete required institutional trainings, trainings for teaching online and professional development.

\u25cf Follow department and division requirements for preparing a course syllabus.

\u25cf Plan and deliver appropriate instructional activities that promote student engagement and learning.

\u25cf Evaluate student performance using assessment tools as directed by the department

\u25cf Inform students in a timely manner of their progress. Maintain an up-to-date electronic grade book and enter final grades by the established due date.

\u25cf Comply with attendance and grading requirements as established for the course.

\u25cf Participate in departmental evaluation and course assessment processes as needed.

\u25cf Maintain regular communication with students, including timely replies to student emails. Use the assigned HCC email for communication within the department and with students.

Minimum Education Required Bachelor's degree Experience Required Preferred Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in subject or related area to teach laboratories, master's degree in subject or related areas to teach lectures
  • Prior teaching experience is preferred.
