Job Summary

Basic Function: The Life Sciences Instructor is responsible for teaching life sciences courses at Bay de Noc Community College primarily at the Escanaba campus. The position primarily involves teaching human biology, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, and pathophysiology for students in nursing, life sciences, and related pre‑health fields. This position may also instruct general education biology and chemistry courses for non-STEM majors. Opportunities to teach additional courses may occur. In addition, the faculty member has various responsibilities related to professional development, curriculum development, student advising and success, as well as activities that support the College and mathscience division operational success. This is a full-time tenure track position.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Masters degree or higher or 18 graduate level credits in Biology or Biology-related field
  • Post-secondary teaching experience in biology
  • Online teaching experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph. D. in Biology or Biology-related field
  • Experience teaching at a community college
  • Experience teaching in a learning management system
  • Online teaching certification
  • Use of evidence-based teaching practices related to active and collaborative learning, critical thinking, and critical literacy and information skills
  • Experience with learning outcomes assessment

Months Per Year: Fall and Winter semesters (August - May) with the opportunity to teach summer courses.

Hours Worked Per Week: A full-time faculty workload of 15 contact hours represents a standard full-time commitment. Additional time is required for preparation, grading, student support, and service, bringing the total workload to approximately 40 hours per week on average.

Travel requirement: There are opportunities to teach at alternate sites including both Bay College campuses. Mileage and travel time reimbursements are determined by the master agreement.

Job Duties

  • Job Duty: Instruct life sciences courses at the Bay College Escanaba campus
  • Job Duty: Facilitate student learning through the following activities:
  • Develop course syllabi that share with students the expectations, standards, policies, and learning outcomes and objectives of the course
  • Actively engage with students, fostering retention and success
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of assessments of course, program, and institutional learning outcomes
  • Use evidence-based pedagogical practices focused on student learning
  • Provide regular and substantive interaction and feedback to facilitate student belonging, engagement, and learning
  • Recognize and respond appropriately to diverse student populations and their learning needs, including disability accommodations
  • Develop and use supplementary learning materials, resources, and technology
  • Hold student hours in accordance with the master agreement
  • Maintain student attendance records, grades, and other required records
  • Job Duty: Maintain science laboratories and equipment in line with applicable safety regulations
  • Job Duty: Collaborate with other faculty using science laboratories and equipment
  • Job Duty: Stock and prepare science laboratories
  • Job Duty: Supervise work study students/student workers as needed
  • Job Duty: Serve as content area lead as needed
  • Job Duty: Collaborate with faculty within and across divisions and with administration to determine scheduling of course offerings, particularly those in the allied health division.
  • Job Duty: Collaborate with faculty and administration on curriculum development as needed.
  • Job Duty: Advise students on academic and career issues in collaboration with other academic advisors.
  • Job Duty: Actively support student success through counseling, advising, and assisting individual and groups of students as needed by maintaining regular student hours and/or scheduled student appointments.
  • Job Duty: Stay abreast of developments in the field of life sciences and teaching and learning by reading current literature, talking with colleagues, and participating in professional development opportunities.
  • Job Duty: Collaborate with other teaching faculty, staff, and administration to ensure that all students receive instruction that promotes learning and growth.
  • Job Duty: Actively participate in division and college activities including but not limited to professional development opportunities, student events, student organizations, etc.
  • Job Duty: Represent Bay College and higher education through advocacy and service in the communities in which you participate.
  • Job Duty: Establish working relationships with transfer institutions and community partners.
  • Job Duty: Actively participate in service to the college including academic or administrative committees focused on continuous improvement, institutional policies, student outreach, engagement, and/or academic matters.
