    JOB SUMMARY:

    The Life Skills Teacher provides specialized instruction and support to high school students with disabilities in a life skills program designed to promote academic, functional, social-emotional, vocational, and independent living skills. The program serves students in grades 9â12 and may continue to provide services beyond grade 12 in accordance with each student's Individualized Education Program (IEP) and eligibility requirements. The teacher develops and implements individualized educational programs that support students in achieving post-secondary goals related to employment, independent living, and community participation. The Life Skills Teacher collaborates closely with staff, families, related service providers, and community agencies to create a supportive and inclusive learning environment that fosters student growth and independence.

    QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

    • Must hold or be eligible for teaching certification in a secondary content area in the State of Delaware- secondary math and/or ELA preferred
    • Must hold or be eligible for special education certification in the State of Delaware
    • Teacher of Students with Autism or Students with Severe Intellectual Disabilities certificate preferred
    • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university
    • Experience working with students with significant cognitive and/or developmental disabilities preferred
    • Knowledge of transition planning, functional curriculum, behavior management, and differentiated instruction
    • Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills
    • Ability to establish positive relationships with students, staff, families, and community partners
    • Knowledge of assistive technology and adaptive instructional strategies preferred
    • CPI, behavior intervention, or de-escalation training preferred

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Develop and implement standards-based and functional instruction aligned with students' IEP goals and transition plans
    • Provide instruction in academics, communication, social skills, daily living skills, vocational skills, and community readiness
    • Create a safe, structured, and supportive classroom environment that promotes student independence and self-advocacy
    • Adapt curriculum, instructional materials, and assessments to meet individual student needs
    • Collaborate with related service providers, general education teachers, paraprofessionals, counselors, and administrators to support student success
    • Monitor and document student progress toward IEP goals and maintain accurate educational records
    • Participate in IEP meetings, transition planning meetings, and multidisciplinary team meetings
    • Conduct ongoing assessments to identify student strengths, needs, and instructional priorities
    • Implement positive behavior supports and behavior intervention plans as appropriate
    • Supervise and direct paraprofessionals assigned to the classroom
    • Facilitate vocational training opportunities, community-based instruction, and work-based learning experiences when appropriate
    • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress, needs, and achievements
    • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and district special education regulations and procedures
    • Collaborate with outside agencies and adult service providers to support students' post-secondary transition planning
    • Participate in professional learning opportunities and remain current on best practices in special education and transition services
    • Other duties as assigned

    WORKING CONDITIONS AND EXPECTATIONS:

    This is a 10-month position based on a 188-day annual contract. Employees are expected to work 7.5 hours per day, consistent with the established school and district schedules. Responsibilities may include duties beyond instructional time, such as meetings, professional development, and school-related events. Employees are expected to maintain regular attendance, fulfill all assigned responsibilities, and demonstrate flexibility to meet the evolving needs of students, staff, and the district.
