GENERAL SUMMARY
Salary: $15.00/hr. - $16.50/hr. (Depending on qualifications)
To observe all swimming pool patrons and ensure their safety while using the facility; to perform rescues, administer CPR and First Aid as needed; and to perform cleaning or maintenance work on the pool and in the pool area.

SUPERVISION
General Supervision is provided by the Swimming Pool Supervisor or Head Lifeguard.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
All behaviors comply with the Code of Conduct and Rules of Behavior outlined in Chapter 8 of the General Government Policies and Procedures Manual.
- Observe pool patrons inside the facility and ensure that pool rules are consistently enforced and safety practices are followed.
- Remains watchful and alert at all times when on duty; recognizes and responds effectively in emergencies; performs water rescue/assistance for any pool patron in distress or danger; provides first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and emergency care when necessary.
- Interacts with pool facility patrons in person and on the telephone professionally; provides information to the public; explains and enforces all pool facility rules, policies and procedures.
- Ability to swim at an athletic level and is good physical condition; lifts and carries supplies, equipment, and other items weighing 50 pounds or less.
- Maintain facility appearance; monitors full facility for cleanliness; assists with pool deck, restroom and pool general maintenance tasks; performs pre-season pool preparations and end of season pool clean up, storage, and winterization as assigned.
- Attends work regularly as scheduled, remaining alert at all times.
- Participates in weekly in-services to keep certification skills and performance up to date and rescue ready.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performs maintenance duties such as (but not limited to) trash collection, floor and toilet sanitation, skimming pool surface, and scrubbing tiles.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION
Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
EXPERIENCE
None required.
Must be a minimum of 16 years of age at time of hire.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
- Current Lifeguard Certification from the American Red Cross.
- Current First Aid Certification from the American Red Cross.
- Current CPR for the Professional Rescuer from the American Red Cross.
WORK SCHEDULE
- Must be available to work a flexible schedule 15-25 hours per week, Sunday - Saturday, Includes evenings, weekends and holidays.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORK ENVIRONMENT
Environmental Conditions:
- Swimming pool environment can lead to exposure of water and chemicals.
- Most duties as a lifeguard are performed working outside, often in extreme heat.
- Lifeguards must be able to work a flexible schedule, to include call backs, shift work, early mornings, evenings, holidays and special events to accommodate City needs.
Physical Conditions:
- The majority of work is performed outdoors on a pool deck or in a swimming pool.
- A lifeguard sits, stands, walks and runs on slippery and uneven surfaces, kneels, crouches, twists, climbs ladders and inclines, swims, reaches, bends, crawls, and pushes, pulls, drags, grasps and lifts pool equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
- A lifeguard will perform strenuous physical activity requiring physical strength and endurance when performing water rescues.
- During the course of some rescues and first aid tasks, a lifeguard may be exposed to blood, and other bodily fluids/ products, communicable diseases and other related health hazards.
- A lifeguard must be able to meet the physical requirements of the job and have mobility, vision, hearing, and dexterity levels appropriate to the level to be performed.
Part Time and Seasonal Employees:
- PARS ARS 457 Plan enrollment is mandatory for part-time and seasonal employees who work less than 1,000 hours per year.
- Each pay period, 6.2% of wages will be deducted from pay and deposited into your PARS ARS account. Contributions are made on a pre-tax basis.
- Each pay period, the City will also contribute the equivalent of 1.3% of wages into a PARS ARS account. Employer contributions are deposited on a pre-tax basis.
- There is no contribution to Social Security Administration.
