Lifeguard Position
A Lifeguard is responsible for the day-to-day patron safety, operations, and supervision of the facility. The lifeguard will perform all routine maintenance tasks in a courteous and professional manner in accordance with the training you have received. The lifeguard will adhere to a strict set of guidelines designed to ensure the safest and cleanest environment possible.
Scope: Provide the necessary supervision of the pool and patrons to ensure the safest, cleanest, family swimming environment possible.
Chain of Command: The lifeguard will report directly to the pool manager on duty and zone supervisor.
Authority:
- The lifeguard is delegated sufficient authority to accomplish the duties, responsibilities, goals and objectives that are established by Douglas Aquatics.
- Stop any process or activity that is unsafe or represents a safety hazard until the condition is either corrected or the coordinator, zone supervisor or manager gives approval for the activity to resume.
Good Performance: Good performance will be judged by the following criteria:
- Ability to supervise patrons and ensure a clean, safe, family environment at all times
- Ensure our quality of service and exceed the customer's expectations
- All required reports are completed in an accurate and timely manner
- Exhibits a can-do attitude and is positive with patrons and staff
- Maintains a professional image of Douglas Aquatics at all times
Douglas Aquatics Lifeguards are expected to:
- Always be on the lookout for a potential hazard
- Ensure the safety of the patrons at all times
- Administer discipline as necessary
- Ensure that all swimmers have passed a swim test if deemed necessary
- Enforce pool and Douglas Aquatics safety rules
- Always be in uniform and maintain a professional appearance
- Do not talk to others while on the lifeguard stand
- Maintain at least one lifeguard on the stand during Safety Breaks
- Protect yourself from dehydration by drinking plenty of water
- Protect your skin by wearing sunscreen
- Know all gate and age limit procedures of your pool and any pool you may be working at
- Make a full visual sweep of your zone of responsibility at least every 10 seconds noting any potential unsafe swimmers or hazards, such as steps and where small children are playing (Per the 10 – 10 RULE)
- Have the rescue tube in your lap and be wearing the strap while lifeguarding
- Have your whistle and pocket mask with you at all times during a shift
- Maintain at least one lifeguard on the stand when more than one person is in the pool at a multi-guard facility
- NEVER leave the pool unattended (not even for one second])
- Call Safety Break every hour for single guard pools in order to give you a break and to check the bathrooms and water chemistry. Multi-guard pools will have set Safety Breaks according to their facility rules.
Requirements
Job Requirements: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty well. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and ability required. Reasonable accommodations will be made to enable those with disabilities. You must:
- Be at least 15 years of age
- Be able to communicate well with fellow staff members and patrons, answer questions and be polite at all times
- Have good reasoning ability
- Be certified in American Red Cross Lifeguarding, First Aid and CPR for the professional rescuer or equivalent
- Have deductive reasoning ability necessary to read, analyze, evaluate and act
- Have transportation to pool facilities
Physical Demands:
- Able to physically execute all swimming and rescue skills learned during training.
- Must have good vision and hearing, if otherwise, corrective lenses and hearing devices are required.
