Position Information

Title Lifeguard Position Description

BSU's Children's Physical Developmental Clinic (CPDC), a nationally recognized academic program that fosters professional development, service learning, and leadership development. The CPDC affords students from all majors opportunity to work with children and youth with disabilities, ages 18 months to 18 years.

The CPDC is in need of certified lifeguard for Saturday mornings, The primary duty of a lifeguard is to protect lives and ensure the safety of people in and around the water. Other responsibilities include:

  • Constantly watch the water and surrounding areas to identify potential dangers or emergencies
  • Enforce water facility rules to ensure safety
  • Respond quickly to swimmers who are struggling or in distress.
  • Administer emergency care when needed until medical professionals arrive.
  • Check and ensure rescue tubes, life jackets, first-aid kits, and other equipment are ready for use.
  • Inform swimmers about water safety practices and potential hazards.
  • Record accidents, injuries, and unusual occurrences according to facility procedures.
  • Identify and address hazards such as slippery surfaces, dangerous currents, or unsafe conditions.

Eligibility requirements:

  • Must be a Bridgewater State University undergraduate student registered for a minimum of six credits for the Fall 2026 semester.
  • Must be available for all 8 Saturdays of the program.
  • Must have updated lifeguard certifications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with children, especially in aquatic, recreational, educational, or camp settings
  • Experience supporting children with physical, developmental, intellectual, sensory, or behavioral disabilities
  • Knowledge of adaptive aquatics and inclusive recreation practices
  • Understanding of common disabilities and how they may affect communication, mobility, behavior, or water safety
  • Ability to communicate effectively with children using different communication styles and abilities
  • Patience, empathy, and strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with parents, caregivers, therapists, teachers, and other staff

Physical Demands

Candidates must possess the physical stamina, strength, vision, and coordination necessary to maintain a safe aquatic environment.
