Job Summary
Under the supervision of the Aquatics Supervisor, the Lifeguard position includes the following duties:
  • Assists the Aquatic Supervisor, Pool Managers, Assistant Pool mangers, Aquatics Coordinators, and Guest Service Leads in the daily operations of the aquatics facilities by performing tasks and duties as assigned
  • Ensures exceptional safety standards are maintained at all times to protect the patrons and staff of the aquatics facilities
  • Lifeguards are expected to be available throughout the entire season for at least 20 hours per week and up to 40 hours per week unless otherwise requested during the job interview
Essential Job Functions
  • Maintains constant supervision of patrons in the facility while providing a safe environment; acts immediately and appropriately to secure safety of patrons and enforces rules and regulations regarding all areas of the facility
  • Implements the emergency action plan and provides emergency care and treatment as needed.
  • Maintains pool area cleanliness including pool deck, building interior and exterior, and restrooms. Remove safety hazards
  • Attends all required pre- and in-service training topics including liability, head, neck and back injuries, first aid, CPR, fitness swimming and lifeguarding skills
  • Presents professional appearance and attitude at all times, and maintains a high standard of customer service
  • Regular, predictable, and punctual attendance is required.
Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. A typical way to qualify is to have completed one year of high school or equivalent life experienceand one year of progressively responsible experience at a pool facility is preferred

Licensure or Certification Requirements
  • Current American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer First Aid, and Administering Emergency Oxygen certificate, or ability to obtain before employment required.
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard or nationally recognized certificate, or the ability to obtain before employment required.
  • Valid and current Ohio driver's license with an acceptable driver's abstract to meet criteria for insurability established by the City of Gahanna

  • Minimum 15 years of age

  • Maintain high standards of safety in all aquatics operations, always adhering to industry standards.
  • Required to utilize specialized personal protective equipment.
  • Provide availability and scheduling information following assigned deadlines.
  • Assist in programming for swim meets and special events.
  • Performs other tasks and duties as assigned by the Recreation Supervisor, Aquatics Coordinators, Pool Managers, and Head Lifeguards

  • Enforce safety regulations and emergency procedures for the public.
Working Conditions:
  • The employee is subject to inside and outside environment conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, and atmospheric conditions.
  • This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires swimming, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions.

Seasonal employees are eligible to participate in the Ohio Public Employment Retirement (OPERS).
