Are you passionate about water safety and helping your community stay active and safe? We are looking for dedicated Full Time Lifeguards to join our team at the Hopewell Community Center. This role offers hands-on experience in aquatic safety, program support, and customer service perfect for students, early-career professionals, or anyone interested in aquatics and public service.
Examples of Duties
What You'll Get to Do
Ensure a safe and welcoming aquatic environment by monitoring pool patrons and enforcing all safety rules.
Respond confidently to emergencies, performing rescues, first aid, and CPR as needed.
Assist with swimming lessons, clinics, aquatic programs, and special events.
Maintain cleanliness of the pool deck, surrounding areas, showers, and equipment.
Support inventory management of pool chemicals, equipment, and supplies.
Participate in ongoing training to maintain certifications and enhance professional skills.
Assist with opening and closing the pool area and as needed, other department recreational programs or city special events.
Work flexible schedules, including evenings, weekends, some holidays, and emergency situations as required.

Typical Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience:
High school diploma/GED and previous lifeguard experience preferred but not required
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Licenses and/or Certifications:
Skills Required:
Strong communication and customer service skills.
Ability to respond calmly and effectively in high-stress situations.
Interest in working in a team-oriented, public-facing environment.
Physical Requirements
Ability to perform rescues and assist patrons of varying abilities.
Frequent standing, walking, lifting, reaching, swimming, and other physical activities associated with lifeguarding.
Exposure to indoor aquatic environments with variable temperatures and noise levels, with occasional outdoor duties.
Supplemental Information
Work Environment:
Primarily indoor facility with occasional outdoor assignments.
Requires vigilance, physical stamina, and ability to handle emergency situations.

Are you at least 18 years of age?

Are you legally authorized to work in the United States of America?

Do you currently possess a valid drivers license in the Commonwealth of Virginia? Or are you able to obtain one upon hire?

Are you able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays, as required by aquatic operations?

Do you currently hold a valid Lifeguard certification, including CPR/AED and First Aid?

Are you willing and able to obtain the Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguard Instructor certifications within six months of hire, if required?

What previous experience do you have working in an aquatic environment, such as a pool, waterpark, beach, or similar?
