Essential Job Functions
The City of Manassas is looking for certified lifeguards or individuals that are interested in becoming certified lifeguards.

The chosen candidate observes and oversees the activities of swimmers; scans the water; enforces pool rules; maintains discipline at facility; takes preventive safety actions; rescues distressed swimmers; provides emergency first aid and CPR; performs other emergency life saving services as needed; provides written reports on incidents, injuries, and rescues; and maintains related documentation.

Performs and completes preventative maintenance and essential cleaning tasks for the pool, deck, concessions, building, locker rooms, bathrooms, pump room, basement, and other related areas within the pool facilities.

Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge of applicable policies and procedures; maintains an awareness of new methods, equipment, and trends in the profession; participates in continuing education and in-service activities; attends meetings and training sessions as appropriate.

Receives and/or reviews various records and reports such as quality of pool, quality of weather, how to handle a struggling swimmer, rotation between stands, and evaluation of safety of patrons, pool deck, and pool water.

Prepares and/or processes a variety of documentation such as safety reports, incident and injury reports, water quality tests, and timesheets.

Refers to lifeguard training, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, AED training, first aid training, emergency action plan, employee handbook, employee safety book, policy and procedure manuals, codes / laws / regulations, publications and reference texts, etc.

Operates a variety of office equipment and machinery such as lifeguard tube, backboard, deck furniture, microwaves, cash register, etc.

Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as Pool Manager, Neighborhood Services Supervisor, patrons, Head Lifeguard, and the general public.

Performs related administrative and aquatics tasks; answers telephone calls; retrieves and stocks supplies; retrieves and assembles lifejackets for patrons; informs patrons of safety precautions; provides swim tests to patrons; assists with swimming lessons; supervises birthday rentals; guards swim team practices and swim meets; assists swim teams with meet set up and take down.

Minimum Required Qualifications

Must be at least 16 years of age by the opening of the pool (Memorial Day weekend). The incumbent will be required possess and maintain the following certifications: Red Cross Lifeguard, CPR and First Aid/AED.

Special Requirements
A swim test will be required in order to maintain employment with the City.
All employees must complete staff orientation.
Employees are required to work a combination of weekdays, weekends, and holidays.
