LIFTED Statewide Support Service Coordinator

Leveraging Inspiring Futures Through Educational Degrees (LIFTED) is a University of California initiative that expands access to higher education for currently incarcerated individuals in California state prisons. The program provides an opportunity for students to complete a bachelor's degree and currently operates at UC Irvine, UC Riverside, and UC Santa Barbara.

Currently the three UC campuses are operating in three California prisons: Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego; Ironwood State Prison in Blythe; and California State Prison, Corcoran in Corcoran.

Responsibilities:

Under the general direction of the UC Irvine Assistant Director, the LIFTED Statewide Support Service Coordinator uses skills as a seasoned, experienced public education student services program professional to streamline online and in person workshop delivery to ensure incarcerated student access to a wide range of UC student support services, across departments and campuses, including library resources, tutoring, disability services, career services, etc. Responsible for resolving a wide range of student service program issues and needs assessments, maximizing online and in-person accessibility of programming from within and across campuses. Develops new student service programs and works on complex student service programs of diverse scope. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for delivering student services, presentations and development programs.

The LIFTED Statewide Support Service Coordinator will also collaborate with campus departments, community-based organizations, and the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation to develop partnerships and referral pathways that support the successful reentry of currently enrolled LIFTED students and LIFTED alumni returning home from prison. This work includes identifying and sharing resources related to career development, employment, housing, business and entrepreneurship opportunities, education, and other evidence-based reentry needs. This position establishes and maintains a coordinated system of information, referrals, and cross-sector partnerships that enables LIFTED programs to help mitigate common barriers following release and connect students with timely resources as they transition home, return to campus, and/or continue their studies.

Receives general instructions and exercises judgment in selecting methods and techniques for course and instructional improvement. Fully knowledgeable in student services programs, campus and UC policy and procedure, as well as the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation rules and regulations. Travel semi-regularly to California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation facilities located in Southern California to work with LIFTED students and deploy workshops and resources.

 

Important Info: 2-Year Contract position with full benefits.  Must be willing to travel to and from 3 UC Campuses and California prison facilities 25% of the time.  Fully remote position with the potential of office space at UC Irvine in the future. Must be able to submit and pass a background check to enter CA Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation Facilities. Experience with the criminal legal system.

Qualifications:

Required:

• Thorough knowledge of functional areas and understanding of how work may impact other areas.
• Thorough analytical skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations, demonstrating organization and problem-solving skills.
• Thorough and effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills and presentation skills to work with a broad population that includes students, parents, professional staff, faculty, and community members.
• Thorough knowledge of and skill in delivering programs.
• Thorough skills to conduct needs assessment and development of new presentations / services to meet organizational needs.
• Skill in using business software systems in the completion of work assignments; i.e., Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint.
• Ability to assess student developmental needs and be sensitive to the needs of students from diverse backgrounds.
• Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance.
• Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities and deadlines. Excellent multitasking and follow-through skills; able to work under pressure managing multiple projects with attention to details.
• Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
• Master's degree in related field, preferred.
• 3-5 yearsIn related field.

Preferred:

• Thorough knowledge of organization policies and procedures.
• Thorough knowledge of current public educational programs and trends.
• Knowledge of the field's post-degree employment opportunities and practices.
• Knowledge of evidence-based reentry programming and community-based organizations that support the successful transition of individuals returning home from incarceration.
• Experience with the criminal legal system.
